The Stone Roses' eponymous debut album been voted the best British album of all time.

The Observer Music Monthly poll of 100 musicians and critics voted for the Manchester four-piece's 1989 album ahead of The Beatles' "Revolver".

The top ten was completed by The Clash's "London Calling", Van Morrison's "Astral Weeks", The Beatles' "Sergeant Pepper" and "White Album", The Rolling Stones' "Sticky Fingers" and "Exile On Main Street", Massive Attack's "Blue Lines" and P.I.L's "Metal Box".

The Beatles and David Bowie both had five albums each in the top 100.

Surprise omissions in the top ten included Oasis' "Definitely Maybe" (19), Radiohead's "OK Computer" (24), The Smiths' "The Queen Is Dead" (37) and Primal Scream's "Screamadelica" (68).

Morrissey, Mike Skinner, Emma Bunton, Brian May and Ozzy Osbourne were among the 100 musicians and critics invited to supply their personal top ten.

In a special interview for the magazine Roses' singer Ian Brown said that the band had wanted to make a record as good as "Electric Ladyland" or "Never Mind The B*ll*cks" but that they were disappointed with the overall production.

He said: "None of us thought the bass and drums were heavy enough, and I still think that."

Bass-player Mani, now in Primal Scream, claimed that he is stopped by someone who mentions the album every day.

Speaking of its appeal 15 years on, he said: "It's heartwarming that it's managed to strike a chord with so many people, and people have been so moved by it.

"At the end of the day it was just four scallies trying to make an album and it's had a profound effect on a lot of people, and that's what you do it for, innit?"
