Topic: Ringo All Starr Band! Return to archive

Dan Last night was my first ever Ringo show. Kick ass gig as far as the live touring jukebox type of performance goes. I was supposed to be helping my dad paint but he wasn't ready yet so I checked out the LA Weekly to see what sorts of live entertainment was available. And like the last time I went out, there was an abundance of comp tickets all over Citywalk.

He went on promptly at 8:15 holding a mic center stage for "It Don't Come Easy," "What Goes On," and "Honey Don't" before taking a seat behind the drums and started rotating among his very impressive band starting with Billy Squier doing "Everybody Wants Some."

The band was

Ringo Starr drums vocals
Billy Squire (guitar)
Edgar Winter (keyboards, guitar, drums, sax - sometimes all on the same song)
Rod Argent (keyboards)
Richard Marx guitar
Sheila E drums
Hamish Stuart bass

Unlike the Blondie show last month, the sound was loud and absolutely crystal clear on the balcony pushing towards almost deafening levels toward the end and especially Hold Your Head Up.

Billy Squire did a sparse version of the blues classic "Ramblin' On My Mind" with some accompaniement by Edgar Winter.

Edgar Winter introduced "Frankenstein" saying he was the first to use the strap on synthesizer.

Sheila E played the drums next to Ringo most of the night but took center stage for a couple of solo hits. She was pretty hot and it was LOUD, I could hear the drums echoing off the wall under the overhang.

Rod Argent played keyboards all night and lead vocals on "Hold Your Head Up" and a killer version of "She's Not There."

The gig predictably ended with With A Little Help From My Friends. Total top notch performance by everybody involved. With the exception of Rod Argent with the Zombies, it was my first experience with most of the performers and my first time seeing a Beatle live. Ringo definitely knows how to put a killer band and a killer show together. Would recommend this one if it hits your town, an underrated and unexpected surprise as far as summer tours go this year.
