New York Dolls Comeback To Be Staged At The Lost Weekend Festival

02 June 2006 - Press Dispensary - The original and ever outrageous godfathers of glam punk, The New York Dolls, have reformed 34 years after their debut, to release a new album in July and to make this year's one UK festival appearance at Lost Vagueness' Lost Weekend festival ( www.lostweekend.org ) in June.

Brought together by Morrissey in 2004 as a one-off for his Meltdown at the Royal Festival Hall, the New York Dolls have since decided to make their revival permanent, resulting in a TV appearance in Chicago this May and the start of their world tour at the Lost Weekend festival. The Lost Weekend is taking place in the grounds of Powderham Castle near Exeter, Devon, from 23-25 June 2006, and the Dolls will appear on the main outdoor 'Lost Stage' on the final night. The album, 'One Day It Will Please Us to Remember Even This' will be issued through Roadrunner Records on 24th July.

Originally formed in 1971, the band was a seminal influence on the early glam rock/glam punk music scene in New York, accumulating a devoted cult fan base over the years with groups like the Ramones, Blondie and Talking Heads following in their footsteps and influences apparent in bands as diverse as Kiss, XTC, Mötley Crüe, Guns N' Roses and even the Sex Pistols. Morrissey was once head of a New York Dolls fan club.

With their big lips, dishevelled wigs, platforms, and crimpolene dresses the New York Dolls have an inimitable stage presence which mixes Iggy Pop’s anarchy with the brutality of Lou Reed. Their sound is hard rock with a self-conscious wit - a celebration of kitsch and camp with a menacing, malevolent edge.

Roy Gurvitz, founder and organiser, Lost Vagueness says: "We’ve booked the Dolls for their dedication to glam and strangeness – I expect sleaze, anarchy and fun - they’ll fit in perfectly!"

Also playing at the Lost Weekend Festival are the Zutons, Julian Cope, The Beat, Kiki & Herb, Geno Washington, Dreadzone and a host of performers across a variety of stages. Other attractions include the Lost Luck Casino, Chapel of Love and Loathe, where couples can book in to marry, divorce or confess their sins; a 50s style diner complete with Cadillac seating, pinball and pancakes; and a velvet swathed ballroom in a 3000 capacity big top, featuring burlesque performers, can can girls, trapeze artists and cabaret. Tickets, priced £90 for a three day camping pass or £45 for a single day admission are available from http://www.lostweekend.org

Notes for editors
The New York Dolls
The New York Dolls are to punk and glam rock what James Brown is to soul. A '70s rock group whose outlandish style, cross dressing and highly energetic playing style prefigured much of what followed in the punk rock era and beyond, the Dolls first performed in New York City in December 1971. The band was initially influenced by vintage rhythm and blues, early Rolling Stones, classic American girl group songs and anarchic post-psychedelic bands such as the MC5 and the Stooges, as well as then-current glam rockers such as Marc Bolan and David Bowie.

The group broke up in the late 70s but reformed in 2004 at the behest of former Smiths front man, Morrissey. The band's current line-up is: singer David Johansen, guitarists Sylvain Sylvain and Steve Conte, bass player Sami Yaffa, keyboard player Brian 'the Professor' Koonin, and drummer Brian Delaney. Their new album, titled 'One Day It Will Please Us to Remember Even This' and produced by the Dolls' former producer Jack Douglas, is due for release on 24 July 2006. The 2004 appearance was described by the LA Times: "Onstage, the Dolls proved worthy of the legendary status that has been built over the years, and then some."

Lost Vagueness
Lost Vagueness started in 1998 as a casino after originating from an illicit bar on the outskirts of Glastonbury Festival. The original irony of travellers in top hats is now overshadowed by the sheer quality of the show: however the grass-roots humour remains the same to this day. As well as running the only field in Glastonbury’s history to be closed due to overcrowding in 2003, and proving a big success at Glasto 2004 and 2005, Lost Vagueness has staged its own events at Strawberry Fair (Cambridge), Stokefest (Stoke Newington) and The Coronet (London), where the Lost Elephant Ball sold out in May 2006. It also showcased a selection of acts at The Lovebox festival in Victoria Park, The Electric Picnic Boutique Festival in Ireland, and ran its own festival near Lewes, East Sussex, in late summer 2004 and 2005.

crb69 The new Dolls CD is gonna kick R&R ass...it may not be too "punky" but will definitely kick ass! They are IMO a lot better now than they were in "the day"...although I am a bigger fan of rock n' roll over punk anytime...I say don't compare this band line up to the old one...they captured a fresh raw rock sound when I saw them last year...I don't care too much for their old classic studio material to be honest...but I can't wait to hear this new stuff. From what I've heard already they really incorporated a lot of the old style into their fresh new sound...Tone goes a long way and Steve Conte is a welcomed slot for Johnny Thunders as far as a guitar player is concerned...of course in true heart Thunders was loved and can never be replaced...
