stewed & Keefed Steven Gerrard is set to be fit for England's opening World Cup game against Paraguay - with kick-off less than two hours away in sunny Frankfurt.

The Liverpool player should start provided he has not aggravated a back injury, while Paraguay striker Roque Santa Cruz has declared himself fit.

More than 30,000 England fans are in Frankfurt ahead of the game, which kicks off at 1400 BST.

But they won't see Wayne Rooney, who is tipped to be left out altogether.

England (probable): Robinson, G Neville, Terry, Ferdinand, A Cole, Beckham, Gerrard, Lampard, J Cole, Owen, Crouch.

Honky Tonk Man WE WON! England 1-0 Paraguay

Well, that was a nerve wrecking experience! After a great start, England kind of fizzled out and what a disgrace for a referee! Still, it’s the 3 points that count!

Madafaka Boring game, really. I expected a little more of England.
Is Sol Campbell playing actually in this team?

3 hours to go! I'm so anxiety to see the argentinian game!

Always loved your style of playing guys, but I too expected more from England, which in my opinion has its best team in 20 years or so. As Alex said, after a great start the attacks started to slow down a bit, and Paraguay which by the way has a great team also started to push England to their defense field.

As for yesterday matches, I was expecting more ability and pressure from Germany, although Ballack didn't play due to a not serious injury.

Now, let's wait for the debut of our hermanos. I predict a massacre, I'm sure it's going to be a easy match for Argentina.

stewed & Keefed England 1-0 Paraguay

England stuttered to victory in their Group B opener in Frankfurt thanks to a third-minute Paraguay own goal.

Carlos Gamarra put David Beckham's left-wing free-kick past his own keeper to set up a half dominated by England.

It was a different story in the second half as Paraguay threatened more as a cautious England put themselves under unnecessary pressure.

Frank Lampard came closest to extending the lead with two long-range efforts as the South Americans pressed for a draw.

England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson will be happier with the points than the performance.

But England will not complain, and rightly so with their history of making slow starts to major tournaments.

Steven Gerrard, as expected, was declared fit after a back injury to give England a full-strength side apart from Wayne Rooney.

And if they needed a lift in the searing heat, it came after only three minutes courtesy of Beckham's free-kick.

England's captain swung in the set-piece and it glanced off the head of Gamarra and beyond the despairing dive of keeper Justo Villar.

England coach Eriksson has plenty to ponder after a lacklustre display

Villar's afternoon got worse two minutes later when he was injured making a clearance and limped off with what looked like an ankle injury.

His replacement, Aldo Bobadilla, did not fare much better, and was penalised for time-wasting, only for Lampard to fail to take advantage of the free-kick 15 yards out.

Nelson Valdes was a threat to England, and he shot wide after a slip by John Terry - with Gerrard shown a yellow card for a tackle as the Paraguayan shot.

England were in confident mood and Bobadilla saved from Lampard as they dominated proceedings, Beckham also shooting narrowly off target.

But Paraguay grew in confidence and goalkeeper Paul Robinson was glad to see another shot from Valdes fly narrowly wide on the stroke of half-time.

England were subdued after the break, and Eriksson decided to make a change after 55 minutes, sending on Stewart Downing for a subdued Michael Owen.

Paraguay were gaining heart from the fact that Eriksson's side had not killed them off, and Roberto Acuna gave England an anxious moment on the hour with another shot just off target.

England's response was a cross-shot from Beckham that flew across the face of goal, and an effort from the lively Joe Cole that was dragged wide.

Paraguay had possession without mounting a serious threat, and Lampard could have doubled England's advantage, only to be denied by two fine saves from Bobadilla.

England held on to deservedly pick up three points, but there will undoubtedly be tougher tests ahead.

stewed & Keefed Trinidad and Tobago 0-0 Sweden

Trinidad and Tobago held on for a courageous draw despite playing the whole of the second half with 10 men.
Soca Warriors defender Avery John picked up the first red card of the World Cup after two reckless tackles.

Cornell Glen had Trinidad and Tobago's best chance with a thumping drive that hit the bar, but they were pinned back for much of the game.

Marcus Allback and Zlatan Ibrahimovic both should have done better with good chances but the islanders held on.

The result means that England will progress to the next round if they beat Trinidad and Tobago on Thursday.

While Sweden will be looking to take three points from Paraguay on the same day.

Trinidad and Tobago were forced to make a change before the kick-off as goalkeeper Kelvin Jack suffered a last-minute injury on the way back to the dressing room after the warm-up session.

West Ham's Shaka Hislop was drafted in to replace him.

And he was almost called in to action inside five minutes when Henrik Larsson's fierce free-kick from the edge of the penalty area narrowly fizzed past the post.

The Swedes, who have yet to win since qualifying for the World Cup last October, controlled the first half and looked more assured in possession, making the Soca Warriors chase the game.

Trinidad and Tobago's most likely source of a goal in the first half looked to be from long-range as Sweden pinned the opposition in their own half.

And it was Carlos Edwards' drive from distance that was the best of the Trinidad and Tobago chances.

But Sweden looked the more likely to find the net and Larsson had a header drift inches over after a Freddie Ljungberg cross and Christian Wilhelmsson drove a stinging shot straight at Hislop.

Anders Svensson and Ibrahimovic both had half-chances to make the breakthrough, but the half-time whistle was met with cheers by the Trinidad and Tobago supporters who were relieved not to have conceded.

Their cheers turned to jeers soon after the break as John picked up the his red card when he clattered into Wilhelmsson.

Substitute Glen almost gave Trinidad and Tobago a shock lead when Cornell Glen thumped a drive off the bar while at the other end Hislop superbly kept out an Ibrahimovic volley.

Sweden became increasingly frustrated and the Trinidad and Tobago players stood firm to repel the Swedes' constant attacks.

Marcus Allback should have given Sweden the lead 10 minuted before time but Hislop again pulled off a fine save to keep the score level.

But the Caribbean side picked up an historic point on their World Cup debut.

axl79 Argentina played only one half of the match.
The second was just as usual "We have this game in our pockets" mentality.
Instead of just kill the much with two more goals, they just start playing around unmotivated and trying to slow down the game, really boring and dissapointing.

If Messi and Tevez starts from the beginning you will see much better game, i think. Dispite Saviola did a good game.

I wouldnt write either side off after one game, just because they didnt hammer the opposition. Both won against decent opposition. England always looked in control of that game, but tired in the heat. Ivory Coast are far from mugs and gave Argentina a good game in what will be the toughest group in the tournament.

Pretty enjoyable first couple of days with a couple of major surprises already. Great achievement by Trinidad & Tobago.

Agree, the last 25-30 minutes were awful.
Costa de Marfil was a tough team, thank god that the game didn't last 5 more minutes...

well, to be honest, it should last at least a couple of minutes more (for the time lost during the extra time and for the substitution) but the referee seemed to be in a hurry... wonder if he would have done the same with a different score

stewed & Keefed Argentina 2-1 Ivory Coast

Argentina got their World Cup campaign off to a winning start with victory over Ivory Coast in a gripping opening to Group C in Hamburg.
Roberto Ayala saw a header come back off the post before Hernan Crespo put Argentina ahead from close range.

Javier Saviola then latched on to Juan Riquelme's exquisite throughball to flick in the second before the break.

Didier Drogba's low shot set up a frantic finale but the Ivorians were let down by some sloppy finishing.

Henri Michel's side will take great heart from an impressive display - particularly in the opening period.

The Ivorians, playing their first game in the World Cup finals, shocked their South American opponents with a frenetic opening spell.

The powerful running of Arthur Boka, Didier Zokora and Kanga Akale opened up the Argentina defence at will before the break.

But the West Africans often failed to find a telling final ball - and when they did, their wayward finishing let them down.

Argentina soon got into their stride with Riquelme majestically patrolling the midfield and Crespo and Saviola a constant threat up front.

Crespo narrowly failed to get on the end of a Maxi Rodriguez cross and from the resulting corner Ayala nearly gave Argentina the lead.

The Valencia man's powerful header was fumbled onto the post by keeper Jean-Jacques Tizie and went dangerously close to crossing the line.

But the Ivory Coast did not learn their set-piece lesson and Argentina were ahead minutes later.

The Ivorians failed to deal with Riquelme's vicious inswinging free-kick from the left flank and Crespo reacted smartly to stab the ball home from close range.

Crespo opened the scoring

The lively Drogba was denied by a fine sliding block from Ayala and Bonaventure Kalou shot wastefully wide after some fabulous wingplay from Yaya Toure.

Drogba then teed up Abdul Kader Ketia with a first-time header back across goal but Ketia headed straight at Roberto Abbondanzieri from six yards.

The Ivorians were made to pay for their sloppy finishing when Villareal playmaker Riquelme picked out Saviola's superb diagonal run and the Seville striker coolly flicked the ball under the on-rushing Tieze.

The pace dropped after the interval with Argentina happy to sit deep and play on the break but the West Africans continued to carve out chances.

A determined run from Drogba eventally saw substitute Bakari Kone blaze over from 10 yards and Drogba then turned a free-kick just wide.

Kone was having a major impact and his pace and cross eventually found Drogba whose low finish set up a nervy final eight minutes for the South Americans.

Maxi then had a goal disallowed for offside with the Ivorians pouring forward but Argentina held on.

stewed & Keefed Serbia & Montenegro 0-1 Holland

Holland opened their World Cup campaign with a hard-fought Group C victory over Serbia & Montenegro in Leipzig.
Chelsea striker Arjen Robben scored the only goal after 18 minutes, sliding the ball under Dragoslav Jevric following a flick-on from Robin van Persie.

With Robben always probing and Wesley Sneijder running the show in midfield, the Dutch were coasting at half-time.

And despite a more upbeat display from Serbia & Montenegro after the break, Holland were good value for their win.

After a cagey opening in a sun-drenched Zentralstadion, Serbia & Montenegro had the first decent chance on 12 minutes.

Predrag Djordjevic found space on the left flank, cut inside and slid the ball into the Dutch area, but Mateja Kezman and Savo Milosevic got in each others' way.

Shortly afterwards, former Aston Villa striker Milosevic shot tamely at Edwin van der Sar when through on goal.

But it was the Dutch who took the lead, Arsenal's Van Persie flicking the ball through for Chelsea's Robben to tuck it beneath the advancing Jevric.

Moments later, a pumped-up Robben stung Jevric's hands with a swirling left-shoot shot as the Dutch began to enjoy themselves.

However, Serbia & Montenegro continued to threaten, Predrag Djordvejic whipping in a cross only for Kezman to head wide on 28 minutes.

And two minutes later, Milosevic found space on the edge of the Holland box but volleyed straight at Van der Sar.

With Serbia & Montenegro pressing for an equaliser, the Dutch, and Robben in particular, were revelling in acres of space at the other end.

Serbia & Montenegro striker Savo Milosevic had chances

Robben just missed the target with a low, curling shot on 35 minutes before bursting into the area and having a shot charged down.

Ognjen Koroman replaced Nenad Djordjevic just before half-time and made an immediate impact, capping a surging run from midfield with a vicious shot that curled past the upright.

But it was the Dutch, with Sneijder pulling the strings in the middle of the park and Robben always a threat, who led at the break.

Serbia & Montenegro replaced Milosevic with the 6ft 8in Nikola Zigic at half-time and attempted to ambush Holland immediately after the restart.

But Dutch striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, who had a quiet first period, had the first clear-cut chance, just failing to back-heel a Sneijder shot past a diving Jevric.

However, Serbia & Montenegro continued to get among the men in orange, and the dangerous Koroman tested Van der Sar with a dipping left-foot shot on 70 minutes.

Shortly afterwards, Zigic very nearly latched on to a Predrag Djordjevic free-kick before the irrepressible Robben dragged a shot just wide at the other end.

Van Persie then almost scored with a low, swerving free-kick that just grazed Jevric's right-hand post and Robben just missed with a similar effort two minutes from time.

The win was essential for Holland, who now face the dangerous Ivory Coast on Friday and Argentina next Wednesday.

Serbia & Montenegro, meanwhile, will have to perform some death-defying feats to advance to the second round.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Serbia & Montenegro: Jevric, Dragutinovic, Gavrancic, Nenad Djordjevic (Koroman 43), Krstajic, Duljaj, Stankovic, Predrag Djordjevic, Nadj, Kezman (Ljuboja 66), Milosevic (Zigic 45).
Subs Not Used: Basta, Dudic, Ergic, Ilic, Kovacevic, Stojkovic, Vukic.

Booked: Stankovic, Koroman, Dragutinovic, Gavrancic.

Angiegirl I'm glad we won of course, but geez, it wasn't much to look at, especially in the second half! Everyone here is still wondering what the hell Van Nistelrooy was doing in the selection, and Sneijder. More speed, and more depth boys! If I want to fall asleep again, I'll go watch a football game at the local retirement home!

stewed & Keefed Mexico 3-1 Iran

The Mexican striker converted from close range to give Mexico the lead, but Iran were level by half time through Yahya Golmohammadi's emphatic finish.

A tense game was decided in the space of three second half minutes when Bravo restored Mexico's lead after an Iranian error and Antonio Naelson, nicknamed Zinha, finished a superb move.

Iran produced the most telling moments of the early stages, with Mehdi Mahdavikia determined to make the most of the new football by hitting a swerving shot from 40 yards which was just wide.

Though the veteran Ali Daei was pedestrian in attack, he had pacey support around him and a penetrating burst from Ali Karimi was halted by a fine tackle from Mexico captain Rafael Marquez.

In the space of 60 seconds, Vahid Hashemian could have twice given Iran the lead as he firstly failed to connect with Hossein Kaebi's ball into the six-yard box.

The Asian side retained possession and, via a cross from the left, Hashemian glanced a header towards goal only to see Oswaldo Sanchez acrobatically paw his attempt away.

Mexico slowly crept into the contest, with set-pieces proving their most potent threat as Marquez failed to direct a corner on target.

From another Pavel Pardo delivery, Guillermo Franco's near post flick eluded his team-mates, but on 28 minutes the combination struck decisively.

Pardo clipped in a free kick from the right, Franco nodded on and the unmarked Bravo had a simple finish from close range, with Iran vainly appealing for offside.

Iran, though, refused to wilt and responded with an equaliser from a set-piece of their own on 36 minutes.

Rahman Rezaei's header from a corner was stopped at point-blank range by Sanchez, but the rebound was thumped into the net by Golmohammadi.

Ricardo Lavolpe made a double change at half time, but barely minutes later and the Mexico coach had to use up his third substitution when Bolton striker Jared Borgetti picked up an injury.

Mahdavikia had another shot from range comfortably saved by Sanchez, with Mexico's switch in formation starting to cause the Iranians more problems.

Marquez was pushing further forward into a midfield position and one charge into the box was unceremoniously halted by Golmohammadi, although no penalty was awarded.

Much of the second half dipped into a dreary lull until Mexico pounced on an Iranian error to grab a second goal on 76 minutes.

Iran keeper Ebrahim Mirzapour's poor clearance was knocked back to Rezaei, who dwelt on the ball long enough for Zinha to pinch possession and roll a crisp through ball for Bravo to tuck home his second of the game.

Just three minutes later and Mexico scored again following a delightful move. Zinha skipped past a couple of token Iran challenges and laid the ball to the right. Mario Mendez whipped in the cross and Zinha, who had continued his surge into the area, connected with a deft header to secure the points for Lavolpe's side.

Mexico: Sanchez, Salcido, Mendez, Osorio, Pineda, Marquez, Torrado, Pardo, Franco, Borgetti, Bravo.
Subs: Arellano, Castro, Corona, Fonseca, Garcia, Guardado, Morales, Ochoa, Perez, Rodriguez, Suarez, Zinha.

Iran: Mirzapour, Golmohammadi, Rezaei, Kaabi, Nosrati, Mahdavikia, Nekounam, Karimi, Teymourian, Hashemian, Daei.
Subs: Bakhtiarizadeh, Borhani, Enayati, Kazemeian, Khatibi, Madanchi, Roudbarian, Sadeqi, Shojaei, Talebloo, Zandi.
