Picked up A Journey Through America With The Rolling Stones - By Robert Greenwood - Thought the Foreword had an interesting start'
Had Anyone told me 25 yrs ago that Ian Stewart, the stones original piano player, whose drugs of choice in order were red meat, single malt whiskey, and golf would be long dead while Keith Richard,he of the lifestyle that challenge the human endurance, would not only be alive and well but living like Uncle Wiggly in Connecticut,I would laughed myself sick"
Interesting greenfield was fired during the middle of the tour and Truman Capoute was to write the account of the 72 tour but that never happened and later greenfield came back on the tour.

Greenfield's obviously never played golf, or rather played it badly like I do. Definitely bad for the pulse rate! Red meat and malt whiskey are not exactly muesli and sports drinks either!

Exactly what I thought when I read the foreword. But of course it's one of nature's injustices that the one who didn't do drugs would die before the hard stuff indulgers... |

Allright, who the hell is Robert Greenwood??? (Maybe I should go out more often). As far an nature being "unjust", I wouldn't call it that....just the luck of the draw, that's all....a mere roll of the dice.

I read it for the first time in the summer of 2002 as Licks was gearing up. It was a great read as I prepared to tur America -- or at least a good chunk of the east coast -- with the boys!
One of my favorite parts is when they arrive in San Fran at the beginning of the tour and a certain bay-area band sent over a freaking trunk full o' chiba as a Welcoming gift. |

It's Robert Greenfield, actually. He was a young writer and the time, hired to cover the tour for Rolling Stone mag until they dropped him in favour of Truman Capote (who as fate would have it, never wrote a line about the tour). But a little publisher gave Greenfield a few grands to do a whole book on the subject. So he went back and wrote what is now considered a classic.
Yes, it's a great book. Some of the stuff is pretty incredible, but then, it's the Stones...
The part about the Playboy mansion is hilarious, and he gave a riveting account of Mick and Keith's arrest in Warwick (Keith for hitting a photographer, Mick for insulting the cops who arrested him...) just hours before a gig in Boston. And things got hairy when the public in the arena threatened to start a riot because the Stones were late... But in the end they were escorted by police to the door of the arena and the concert could go on!!! |

Thanks MW.

why do you consider it an "injustice" MW??...are you suggesting there is something morally wrong with "drugs" and/or those that use them
and make no mistake malt whiskey is as hard a stuff as there is stuff

The legend says keith put ketchup on Truman Capote's hotel door in Houston in honoe of In Cold Blood and legend has it that keith got upset with jagger and highjacked the cherry picker and went off and played a 20 minute solo on YCAGWYW. |

They only used a cherry picker in 1981-82, and this book is about the 1972 tour. But the ketchup on Capote's door story IS in the book. In cold ketchup, indeed! |

Let's just say it's one of life's dark ironies, if you prefer...
I have nothing against drugs on a *moral* level (well, would I be a Stones fan if I had such prejudices!) but from a medical point of view you can hardly discount that cocain & heroin are pretty dangerous.
Alcohol is no child's stuff either, but as long as you don't overindulge, it's not a threat to your life. You don't have to buy your whiskey off gangsters in dark alleys, for instance, and when you buy a known brand, you don't have to fear about getting it mixed with something poisonous or more potent in alcohol than expected. And you don't risk being put in prison for possession. (Except if you live in Iran or Saudi Arabia, of course!)

great book - he did an interview that was published, in it's entirety somewhere. some (maybe all) is in tarle's exile book (I will have to check )
I enjoyed the ideas they were coming up for as a finale for the tour (and mick's 26th?) - like putting thousands of amyl crackers on the floor, elephants, chickens, ... classic sh*t!
chicago/playboy mansion section is classic, too... something about the glimmer twins leaving that placed bruised and tired. i expected more from the final hottub scene, however...
greenfield is a solid writer, and if you haven't read his book, STP - a journey though America with the Rolling Stones, you should really give it a go...
and, if you are reading it, it is fun to watch csblues and listen to bootlegs from the tour - immerse yourelf in the whole thing!! (maybe I am just a bit odd, but I dig doing it that way)...
like they say - the Stones wrote the book on 70's rock excess, and they did so gloriously in the summer of 1972. |
