Ventura County Star
Paris is doing time, Lindsay's back in rehab, Britney just got out, and no one seems to know where Nicole will end up next. Is it just me, or are these Hollywood bad girls behaving in ways that would make Keith Richards blush?
Well, the Stones aren't getting stoned anymore. Eric Clapton has his own rehab center, and many celebs are touting the benefits of sobriety. Understandable, since it's hard to be a billion-dollar band when you're high as a lab rat. Still, some think that acting the part contributes to selling seats. Are the bad girls of Hollywood acting out to promote their careers by these desperate acts? Or are they simply being irresponsible?
Any teenager knows on some level that negative attention is better than no attention at all, and most know how to get it. When their role models show them new ways to make themselves look bad, it certainly doesn't help. I have to wonder if Lindsay, Britney and Paris ever stop to think about how their antics might affect their fans.
Unfortunately, many kids will look at how these girls are skating through life, without being responsible for their actions, and getting away with it. What most folks don't realize is that these young stars are often being paid to party (for example, a new club might hire celebrities to show up and strut their stuff). I just can't help wondering why these people spare the expense of hiring a chauffeur or a cab. I'm sure Mel Gibson wishes he'd hired a driver. The judge who sentenced Paris got some flack for his decision, but it was truly the right thing to do, and it may have saved her life and perhaps the life of another.
Drug and alcohol abuse usually starts when we're young enough to party all night and still have the strength to get up the next day and do it all over again. After several years of choosing to put chemicals into your body, you no longer have the option, because dependency or addiction takes its place. It's never a pretty picture. From Elvis to Marilyn, the list of those who have lost their careers and lives to substance abuse reads like a who's who of Hollywood.
Britney's hair cutting, Lindsay's accident and Paris' bust should make everyone who idolizes them sit back and think. If you have millions, you can usually buy your way out of trouble, but no amount of money can put a shattered life back together.
These girls need to see that they're not above it all. Maybe the best way to do that is for us to turn off the TV when they start trying to be cute about their addictions. It's so not hot.
