Thanks for the great review Angiegirl. I agree about them hanging it up after these dates.
Could you imagine how much cringing we would be doing in 2009 ? |

Thanks Angie, great review, anyway this set list sucks, I can 't see the interest of rehearsing 80 songs to perform only 19(WTF????)of them and of course always the same!
the combo SMU/YGMR definitely makes me shit liquid! |

Thanks for the "detailed" review, Angie. Sounds like you had a good time despite the "odds." And it really is a good thing that you thought they were better than your last concert!! |

Angie--you had me laughing out loud this morning!! Thank you for taking the time to post your experience. |

OldKR--what does Mick think of the Dutch boys?? Judging from some of the porn I've seen from The Netherlands, well, it's tastier than the stuff the US produces... |

I was there and the concert was great! It was my first Stones-gig ever. But the rain, OMG. I've never had so much rain on me in my life and I had nothing on but my t-shirt. No coat and they threw my umbrella away at the entrance. But it was great nevertheless. |

Well, I suppose it's easier to say if you've seen them 42 times like Angie! (by the way, thanks for the review, I enjoyed it although I disagree on some things )
I've seen them 3 times. 3!!! I've not been disappointed, tired, or angry with them yet. So please, it sounds really ungrateful to ask for them to quit - quite honestly, I don't see or hear a disaster here. Try to keep in mind that only hard-core fans can tell such "differences" in quality - and what is the percentage of hard-core / average fans in a Stones gig?
I'm not saying we should take whatever we're served - but I don't think they're so bad that they should stop. And anyway, if I was so appalled at the Stones sound nowadays, I'd just focus on the golden era and be happy. Should I expect something to stop just because it's no longer good for me? Or to save the legacy?
These are all very subjective things, and for crying out loud, it's THEIR damn legacy, they can choose to do whatever they like with it. I've never understood how fans seem to know what's best for an artist. Just because WE decided to listen to a band, pay money to see them perform live and buy their records, doesn't mean we suddenly purchased shares and we can tell them what to do. If we don't like it, we can just stop paying money to see it, and they'll get the message.
I know this may come off stupid at parts, but it's the beginning of a damn tour of the band we're supposed to love, and all we seem to do is nag and ask for an end. Excuse me, but that's NOT how I feel. I was very excited for this tour to start, and I still am, and I don't understand how some of you guys get off by nagging at it. |

Well a mixed bag...Angie whose seen 42 shows says it was an ok show with warts....One guy who saw them for the first time says it was great..and I see a pic of the crowd everyone hands in the air wavin like shit...I've seen 40 myself and know the feeling ya get when they nail it...guess I need to get used to not feeling that way anymore...Reminds me of when an old Mickey Mantle was hitting .225....All great things shall pass... |

Those pics of Charlie are supreme. He looks so elegant. A true craftsman.
Not a bad setlist at all. YGMR - what the hell is it with that song that attracts the band to it?
Keith looks horrid. And the mo has gotta go. |

I posted this on IORR, so apologies if I've made you suffer through it twice:
In retrospect, I should have realized that I was jinxing myself when, at 3 pm yesterday, as I arrived at Goffert Park, I remarked "the weather couldn't be better." A few hours later, it wasn't cheers that greeted Van Morrison - it was cracking thunder. Soon we were being pelted by bitter-cold rain. Luckily, we were provided with tarps, thus creating a tent that encompassed almost the entirety of the FOS area. This is where things got fun - with all of the hashheads toking up under the plastic, a well-sealed "fishbowl effect" took hold. Hey, when in Holland . . .!
That prima donna Van Morrison couldn't handle the rain however, and left after playing only three songs. (It appeared that Bobby Keyes stole his outfit later on, as well) Then again, nobody could see the stage at that point anyway, so the management should have just put on a Van Morrison CD and told us it was actually him performing! Not only that, but what with all of us under the tarp, it was almost one of thoes European arena shows that we've all been clamouring for.
Anyway, as Keith says, On With The Show. And that brings me to the painful part: speaking in terms of sheer execution, the Stones simply are no longer a great live band. (With the exception of Charlie, who, yet again, missed nary a beat all night.) The guitars were simply MIA through much of the show: Keith played probably only 50% of the time, and when he did, it was either tired old Chuck Berryisms or just noise. Happy should be renamed Sad: it was an absolute trainwreck. CYHMK was marred by the all-too-human riff's slopiness as well. As for Ronnie, well I love the guy, but his playing was servicable at best. The guitarists seemed mainly concerned with looking 'cool' : smoking cigarettes and posing. (Yep, Ronnie's smoking again onstage.) OK, fine, superficial bastard that I am, I will admit that I think they do look cool smoking! (As the saying goes, at least I'm deep enough to realize that I'm shallow). As for Mick: his antics, as always, were a hoot, but his somewhat lackluster vocals detracted from a few numbers - mainly She Was Hot. And as for his costume . . . well, you guys have seen the pictures, right?
There were certainly bright spots, however: It's All Over Now was superb (the berryisms worked very well there), as was All Down the Line. (Ronnie really came through on that one.) And how can you go wrong with Sweet Virgina? And yes, I'm one of those sickos that loves the hell out of Tumbling Dice every time he hears it. As for the setlist, for the most part, I think it was very good. However, only 19 songs (and less than two hours) after we endured the rain seemed a little skimpy. Bring back the two-song encores! Also, despite my repeated cries of "Play Indian Girl" they declined to honour my request. Aah, such is life . . .
And more importantly: despite the subpar guitar work, I still had the time of my goddamn life. Myself and some German friends I met up with were RIGHT IN FRONT! Maybe FIVE METERS AWAY from the stones themselves! (I'd only seen them as roughly the size of ants before.) Hell, I could see every last wrinkle in Mick's face. I also noticed that Mick doesn't really look at the crowd (his eyes are strangely vacant), whereas Ronnie and Keith certainly do. (I even made eye contact with Ronnie! I can die happy now.) The atmosphere down front was just great - lots of hardcore fans like ourselves. I even found myself joining along with the 'Hey Heys' of YGMR - my head said no, but my gut said yes!
One last thing: let me give a warm thank you to the wonderful people of Nijmegen. (A really lovely city, by the way.) I went out to a few bars after the show, and the Dutch people I met were uniformly exceedingly generous. One of them even let me sleep in her bed! Believe you me, that was much more pleasant than what my original accomidations were: sleeping on a cold hard bench in front of the train station.
See you in Paris!

Some reviews from IORR:
"If Werchter was the warmup show this was the great real starter. Keith was the killer doing some great great guitar playing on SHE WAS HOT - Ronnie said thank you that was great great great playing to Keith as the song finished, while Mick was jumping around like there were no slippery wet surface on stage. ... During Painbt It Black the guy next to me said something in Dutch. I explained I did not undererstand. Then in English he said: They get better and better every year"
"Great guitar playing from Keith."
"I Wanna Hold You was much better now than at Werchter. Keith sang the right 1st verse and at the end of the song we got to witness the WEAVIN! Ronnie and Keith playing great sololines against each other. Truely beautiful. The intro of Happy was a bit rusty, but Keith's singing was perfect."
"Tonight was Keith's night, with sizzling solos -- aided and abetted by Ronnie -- on "She Was Hot," "Can't You Hear Me Knocking," and especially "I Wanna Hold You."
And I like it, like it, yes I do

Fantastic job on the review, nikkibong. One of the most entertaining I have ever read.
So many of us have ended up describing our live experience by pretty much saying, "The Stones were sloppy. I had the time of my life."

Maybe it's because I spent the morning supervising movers take all of my late Parents salvagable furniture and boxes of my memories to an 8x8 storage space.
I'm waxing nostalgic big time. And Jeep's photos prove that our time with this Band is not forever.
So enjoy the shows in Europe. Flaws and all. There will never be an experience like a live Stones show. Not for me, anyway.
And when the lights DO go out for good, we are all gonna be very very sad.

>I don't understand how some of you guys get off by nagging at it. <
I sure as shit don't "get off" on any of this! You think I WANT it to be this way?
What the fuck is wrong with you?
Do you really think that I sit around hoping that a band that I adore will fuck up and self destruct so I can nag about it? I've been called all sorts of names...most of them true...but that is one of the most insulting things I've ever read. And I'm reqally glad that this is over the internet...because if you had said that to my face, I would have decked you on the spot.
I want the band to do well. Nobody is rooting harder for them than I am. But I also call it like I see/hear it. Dude, this shit is bumming me out...and I hate being bummed out. I would much rather be a cheerleader. The problem is that I haven't heard/seen anything to cheer about. I don't cheer for trainwrecks. And I sure as shit don't want these trainwrecks to keep happening. Christ dude, I've never wanted to be proven wrong about something more than I do right now. |

It was just mick alone on his guitar and the whole crowd joined. One of the greatest moments I"ve seen with this band in 17 shows.
He said: would you sing with me or something. |
