Journalist Scott Young dies at 87
PETERBOROUGH -- Canadian journalist and author Scott Young has died at 87.
Young -- father of pop music icon Neil Young -- died Sunday in Kingston.
He travelled the world covering the Second World War, the assassination of John F. Kennedy and top sporting events in North America.
"He . . . preferred to be at home," Margaret Hogan, his wife of 25 years, said yesterday. "He was a kind, hospitable person who loved to walk in the country and follow the seasons."
Young, born April 14, 1918, in Cypress River, Man., married three times and had a total of seven children and stepchildren.
Young's journalism career took him from the Winnipeg Free Press to CP, the Globe and Mail, Maclean's magazine and the Toronto Telegram. He gave up newspapering in 1980.
He also wrote 45 novels and non-fiction works, including The Flood, the Arctic thrillers Murder in a Cold Climate and The Shaman's Knife, and 1984's Neil and Me, about his relationship with his famous rock 'n' roll son.
Hogan said her husband hadn't written in years.

Oh, man, that's awful news. Scott was a good, intelligent guy who, like mentioned above, really understood his son's music and supported him in his endeavors. (Compare that to his mother, Rassy, who dismissed the Tonight's the Night album by saying, "The one where everyone dies? It's awful, I've never played it.") I hope Neil will be all right.
Rest in peace, Scott. |
