Topic: Starbuck's "50 greatest albums of all time" for summiteers hitting the road.... Return to archive Page: 1 2
7th June 2007 05:42 PM
Starbuck For anyone planning on embarking on long road trips to distant summits this weekend, I have a special treat for you. i sat down and composed a list of the 50 greatest albums of all time! The list only comes to about 47 or 48 albums or so…I reserve the right to add the few that I forgot as soon as they make themselves known…I also did include three GH albums and 3 live albums, which cannot be included on the album list, as they are not albums proper, but deserve notice.

pdog It is rather odd that the artists seemed to be lumped together on the list...

I don't see how London Calling doesn't split The Beatles... Abbey Road/White Album.
Was this compiled hastily?
No critic of the actual albums, lots of good ones... Can we expect 50 words or so as to why these are your favs? That's at least 50 words per album. Get cracking...
7th June 2007 06:09 PM

Starbuck multiple entries from an artist signify that the artist/group is one of my favorites and, therefore, "better". however, i won't say that london calling is or is not a better album than abbey road, loaded, beggars....that changes with mood.

the albums on this list have consistently received airtime for as far back as i can remember. i have also had each of them for at least a year and have had time to properly digest them. i could have, for example, added old crow medicine show's "OCMS" to the list, but i have only had that one for a few months....will it have staying power in my disc changer like the other 50? or will it turn into a "kerosene hat" type album that only gets brought out once a year on special occasions? or...even worse...will i wake up one morning and discover that the album sucks as bad as the REM albums i used to own in college? (perish the thought!)

joey come now...i know you have a propensity towards naked men, pete townsend and simon and garfunkel...admit it...

PartyDoll MEG Bucky..you show a diverse interest in music..That would be a good thing..

I thought you were kidding me about OCMS...but I think that is your future in the musical world..Banjo or harp..go for it!!!

Good luck with your creative powers at your upcoming summit. Just leave the sailor suit at home. Might be too much for Feej

interesting Bucky

if i had to choose two Bowie albums i think i'd go for Station to Station & Low

as for your bob choices - along with BOTT i would have to have John Wesley Harding somewhere in my top 5
8th June 2007 10:14 AM
Starbuck i have never really dug john wesley harding. too bare bones for my tastes....and the lyrics just don't resonate with me as much as some of his other stuff.

it was actually harder picking dylan albums than it was stones and beatles. strange.

SIA, will you be attending any summits this weekend?

Nasty Habits Bucky: In the face of such heavy vinyl the absence of Waylon Jennings' "Honky Tonk Heroes" is a shocking omission and should be corrected immediately.

Ronnie Richards Of course, this is not nearly enough.... any decent household must also have good collections of Motown, Stax, Muddy Waters, James Brown, Hank Williams..
11th June 2007 05:21 AM
MrPleasant Hey Ronnie, I kinda forgot R.E.M. in my brilliant list. The Singles Collection (1994) will do. And Up is good, regardless of what the regular people think. And I prefer Monster to anything that Nirvana ever did, especially after Kurt Cobain started to stink up his house with his putrefacted dead corpse. Thanks a lot, Kurt! Next time, take a shower!
Signed,
Abraham Lincoln.

11th June 2007 05:33 AM
MrPleasant And I must be alone in the world for liking this album so much (how could people resist to something like George Harrison's "Wrack My Brain"?; and, of course, Ron Wood co-wrote and played in "Dead Giveaway", but it should suck because the Rolling Stones are the only band that matters), but I can't help it. I have bad taste, so sue me.

Look! The girl driver didn't want his roses! How sweet is that??

11th June 2007 11:06 AM
Starbuck SIA...we don't do across the universe. get back is the only tune of let it be so far, but we will be adding one after 909 for sure and a few other of the live tunes.

glencar I couldn't get past Let It Be. That should NEVER be on a greatest albums list.

Starbuck nice list ronnie....thanks for the input.

however i did not start this thread with the intention that it become an REM love fest. i demand those albums be taken down immediately, or this thread will be officially disbanded.

REM stinks worse than steelie in a showerless/commodeless prison cell for 2 years.

Vacation was fantastic! I am the world's greatest host, I'm told. But seriously, Let It Be is not that good. I didn't reflexively attack all yer Rutles choices.
