Topic: Robert Quine Dead Return to archive Page: 1 2

prism Guitarist Robert Quine has been found dead in his NYC apartment, with suicide note. He was depressed since his wife died in August. He played with The Voidoids, Lou Reed, Tom Waits (Rain Dogs), Marianne Faithful (Strange Weather), Eno, James Chance, Matthew Sweet. He was 61.

UGot2Rollme That's a shame. I saw Quine play with Lou Reed and really admired his work with Matthew Sweet - he had a unique, explosive style of playing the guitar.

Rest in Peace.

FPM C10 That SUCKS. Quine was a great guitarist, who put me in mind of (but pre-dated) Marc Ribot and Smoky Hormel - that great, bent, crazy style.

I guess he was probably distraught over the death of President Reagan.

Sir Stonesalot Oh man, that is awful news.

I'm a big fan of Richard Hell and the Voidoids, and Robert Quine gave them that deranged guitar sound that drove them.

Another thing that Quine did, that he doesn't get any attention for...is that he gave the world the "Quine Tapes" of the Velvet Underground's first west coast tour. The sound quality is for shit, but it captures the Velvet's at the height of their primal powers. It is a great thing that he left us with.

Well, I guess he packed a lot in during his 61 years. Here's to you Robert, and a life well lived.

The Angry Man
by Phyllis McGinley

The other day I chanced to meet
An angry man upon the street
A man of wrath, a man of war,
A man who truculently bore
Over his shoulder, like a lance,
A banner labeled Tolerance.
And when I asked him why he strode
Thus scowling down the human road,
Scowling, he answered, I am he
Who champions total liberty
Intolerance being, maam, a state
No tolerant man can tolerate.

When I meet rogues, he cried, who choose
To cherish oppositional views,
Lady, like this, and in this manner,
I lay about me with my banner
Till they cry mercy, maam. His blows
Rained proudly on prospective foes.

Fearful, I turned and left him there
Still muttering, as he thrashed the air,
Let the Intolerant beware!
