Starbuck Mich. man in wheelchair takes wild ride

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - A 21-year-old man got the ride of a lifetime when his electric wheelchair became lodged in the grille of a semitrailer and was pushed down a highway for several miles at about 50 mph.

Ben Carpenter was unharmed but was taken to a hospital as a precaution. He had been secured to his wheelchair by a seat belt. Carpenter, who has muscular dystrophy, told a television station that he thought he might not make it through the ride.

"I was probably thinking that this is going to keep going and not stop anywhere, 50 or 60 miles somewhere," he told WOOD-TV of Grand Rapids.

Ben Carpenter's father, Donald, told The Associated Press that his son had started to cross at an intersection Wednesday afternoon in Paw Paw, about 140 miles west of Detroit. The light changed to green while his son was in front of a semi, which started moving.

The wheelchair's handles became lodged in the grille, the father said, and the wild ride started.

Motorists called 911 on their cell phones, and a pair of undercover police officers who happened to be nearby saw what was happening. They pulled the truck over and told the disbelieving driver, Donald Carpenter said.

The chair was undamaged except for losing most of the rubber on its wheels, he said.

"It's a very bad story that ended very well," he said. "We're just thrilled that he's still around."

Man leaps at Pope in popemobile

A man tried to leap into the popemobile today as the Pope rode on it towards his weekly general audience in St Peter's Square, Rome.
In a major but brief scare for the Pope's security staff, the man vaulted a crowd barrier and tried to climb on to the back section of the slow-moving, open jeep-like vehicle. He was quickly wrestled to the ground.

Pope Benedict XVI appeared not to notice the scuffle on the ground directly behind him.

It was not clear from video footage whether the man actually managed to get on to the vehicle for a few seconds or was tackled before he reached it. He did not appear to be armed.

The Pope was not hurt or in any way visibly affected and continued acknowledging people in the square. He proceeded with the audience as if nothing had happened.

The man, who was wearing dark shorts, a red T-shirt and baseball hat, appeared to be in his 20s or 30s. A Vatican official said the man was being held for questioning by the city state's police, the Associated Press reported.

With at least eight security men around the popemobile, the man came from two or three rows back in the crowd and climbed the barrier at a section where he was almost face-to-face with a security officer. Attempts were made to restrain him from the moment he got over.

While today's popemobile was open-air, some earlier versions included bullet-proof glass enclosures after Pope John Paul II was shot and critically wounded by the Turkish man Mehmet Ali Agca in St Peter's Square in 1981.

Gay sailor axed for rookie romp

By JOHN KAY
Chief Reporter
September 11, 2006

A SAILOR has been booted out of his Navy base for allegedly romping with a male trainee.
Fitness instructor Sam Connell, 22 — who is a Mr Gay UK finalist — is said to have had consensual sex with a 20-year-old recruit in the gym.

Top brass ordered him off HMS Raleigh in Plymouth at just an hour’s notice. There are strict “no-touching” rules, banning fraternisation between trainers, senior ratings and recruits at the base.

A top-level investigation is now being carried out by Navy detectives.

Scandal ... HMS Raleigh
An insider said: “It’s a massive embarrassment for the Navy.” Meanwhile in ANOTHER sex scandal at the same base, five staff are accused of flings with female recruits. And a physical trainer was suspended following allegations he assaulted trainees.

All ratings who join the Navy have initial training at HMS Raleigh.

This is the first time a male trainer has been accused of romping with a male recruit. Sam who enlisted in the Navy when he was 16, only admitted he was gay recently when he won the Mr Regional Gay in Plymouth.

At the end of this month he will compete against 24 other men for the Mr Gay UK title, which carries a £5,000 prize.
