Topic: Wyman Confirms Stolen Bass Return to archive

Mr Jimmy Wyman gets his guitar back
Date: 04/06/04

Retired Rolling Stones bass player Bill Wyman can now get some satisfaction. He finally has the bass guitar he lost in New Zealand nearly 40 years ago.

Wellington musician and business consultant Nick Sceats, who had the guitar for 15 years, air-freighted it to Wyman at Easter after discovering it belonged to the rock star.

Sceats received a letter from Wyman late last week acknowledging that the bass he thought he had lost forever was back in his hands.

"It doesn't look too bad for wear and tear, considering what it has gone through and the travelling it has done over the years," Wyman said.

"Once again, thank you. Your kindness was well appreciated."

Mystery still surrounds how Wyman lost the guitar in the first place. Wyman, who kept a detailed diary of all the Rolling Stones tours in the 1960s, did not say in the letter how it went missing.

The guitar, called a Wyman bass, was one of a small number made by manufacturer Vox in the 1960s and the only Vox guitar adorned with an endorser's name. It was lost when the Rolling Stones played Wellington in 1966.

A story went that it had been stolen and was passed among Wellington music circles for several years. By the time it came into Sceats' possession, no-one knew if the story was true, only that it was the "legendary Wyman bass".

Finally determined to get to the bottom of the story, Sceats contacted Wyman in April, saying he had a bass guitar that he believed was his and asking if he would like it returned.

Sceats was stunned when Wyman wrote back to say it was definitely his and he would love to have it back.
