Thanks for a great list:
Link Wray, Scottie Moore,Stevie Ray, Billy Gibbons. With all of those which are on my list how could you forget James Burton of Elvis, Rickey Nelson and Jerry Lee Lewis Fame. Great list, you missed only one. I think.

Influence has to start at the begining, and even if modern day guitarists don't know who _____ is ,it doesn't matter, follow the family tree. Anything else is just bullshit list-mania and it makes me ill.
Influence, just looking at the list, shows me it's mostly about popularity and name recognition, not influence!
Agreed! On another topic, most underrated guitarist has to be Prince. His guitar playing does not get enough credit! |

Dan |
Robert Johnson
Chuck Berry
Jimi Hendrix
Eric Clapton/Jeff Beck/Jimmy Page
I would stick Ace Frehley in the top 5-10, not even for skills so much as many little kids saw that makeup on TV and decided they wanted to play guitar too. |

many people forget what a terrific guitar player steve miller is.....or was.
he is playing a concert soon in portland for curtis salgado, though. see this http://www.curtissalgado.com/
curtis one of the true greats and needs help.
anyway, steve miller is a true guitar master. i saw him once shortly after hendrix died and he did a tributte to jimi. closed my eyes and would have sworn in was jimi himself!! |

I didn't forget James Burton, friend.
If you follow the thread, you'll see that I have been keeping a 'running' list. Mr. Burton shows up early. |

If it's about Rock And Roll, then it's all about CHUCK BERRY! Not the best, by any stretch, but the most influence to be sure in terms of our favs The Rolling Stones. Keith himself has said so ad nauseum in terms of his own influences. |

Sorry your right. You have got the man right there. Mr Burton. I think he is the most underated lead, kickass, guitar player of all time. |

Except this thread isn't the "best guitarist" or "underrated guitarist" thread. It's the "most influencial guitarist" thread.
Thus, Burton ain't even close. However, Burton is great, so please don't misinterpret. |
