Topic: Mick bit off a peice of his tounge........From Ian Return to archive
28th May 2004 06:46 AM
IanBillen Everyone here is so knowledgable about The Stones here but here is something maybe not everyone knows.

*Mick Bit off a peice of his tounge when they were Little Boy Blue and the Blue Boys in an athletic accident. The rest were worried he wouldn't be able to sing when he returned however it made his style of singing more notable and added to his style rather than hindering it. That is why he kinda pronounces his S's in sounds as a ShhhhhCt. It is his way of kinda singing if you listen closely.

Other interesting facts about The Stones:

The Stones were the first to have a live concert in "Real Time" on the internet in 1995. Mick says the whole thing was actually wrapped together in ducktape as far as cabling goes.

The Stones were the first to wear make-up. 1968 for Jumpin Jack Flash video with the Indian war-paint. How cool and in your face it was.

After shows on tour with The Stones Charlie Watta sketches his bed on tour in hotel rooms on a regular basis and keeps a scrapbook of them.

Monkey Woman Poor Chalie Watta!!! LOL

Yes, some of these stories are quite well known, except for those who are new to the Stones. For exemple, Charlie's sketches or the JJF promo film. They've talked about it in books (Bill Wyman's Rolling With The Stones, for instance, or A Life On The Road, by Jools Holland) and interviews. Excerpts from the JJF video can be seen in the documentaries 25 X 5 and Let It Bleed. Charlie also talks about his sketching in According To The Rolling Stones.

For more quotes and anecdotes, you might be interested in Mark Paytress' book Off The Record, a collection of what the Stones (and their friends and family) said about themselves from before 1962 to 2003.

About the "Mick Jagger tongue-biting incident", it's told in every Mick Jagger biography published. Some of them insist with relish on the gory side: he's supposed to have bitten the tip of the tongue off, or even swallowed it! Yuk... But if you look at his tongue now in photos or videos, it seems quite normal and whole. So it's true that he had an accident in PE class, but it must have only temporarily impaired his elocution, for a few weeks perhaps, before it healed. (His friends at the time said that the extra slurring this tongue injury forced in his singing helped him get closer to the feel of the blues records they tried to copy: learing black American voices, sometimes sounding half-drunken or drowsy. But that's their opinion.)

Mick was always mimicking the talking and singing of his heroes, anyway, and he regaled his friends with impersonations of teachers as well as characters from TV shows. He also said that when he was a teenager, he read an article about Fats Domino in a music paper, and was interested about what Fats said about pronunciation. For him, a blues singer shouldn't prononce perfectly every word. So said Mick that from then on, he copied that exemple.
