Stars come out to aid Toronto
One-night only concert June 21
Organizers aim to give city a boost

MARTIN KNELMAN
ENTERTAINMENT COLUMNIST

Many of Canada's biggest international stars will come to Toronto's aid for a spectacular low-price, two-venue Toronto-boosting concert on June 21, the Star has learned.

Among the headliners for the one-night only mega-concert are Neil Young, Shania Twain, Avril Lavigne and Sum 41.

The Ontario government is joining forces with concert promoters ClearChannel Enterainment and Roots Canada.

The concert will be announced this morning by Ontrario cabinet ministers Brian Coburn and Jim Flaherty at the SkyDome's Hard Rock Caf.

The objective if the concert is to appeal to the widest possible audience.

The organizers also want to make people feel better about Toronto in the wake of the SARS crisis.

That's why organizers yesterday were working toward staging events simultaneously at two venues the Air Canada Centre and the SkyDome with a combined capacity of 70,000.

That's why ticket price will be capped at $35 or $40 to make the concert extremely affordable.

And that's why the performers ranging from the youthful Avril Lavigne to the ageing Neil Young will appeal to several generations. It is aimed at a wider constituency than a proposed free concert by the Rolling Stones, which would have appealed mainly to the Baby Boom generation.

Organizers of the concert, including Roots co-founders Don Green and Michael Budman, have pledged the June 21 concert will be achieved with little or no cost to taxpayers. Roots shirts promoting Toronto will be sold, with proceeds going to SARS relief. The date of the concert was chosen to coincide with the official first day of summer to help set an upbeat mood.

Ironically, though, Don Green will miss the event. He and his wife are flying to Italy to celebrate their son's 21st birthday, and will be with him in Venice on June 21.

A major television network is involved in the deal. And organizers are hoping the talent lineup will guarantee major media coverage in the U.S. and across Canada.

Last night organizers were still scrambling to get commitments from two Toronto-born comedy supserstars, Mike Myers and Jim Carrey. Myers, who recently appeared on NBC's The Tonight Show to boost his hometown, is scheduld to be here June 25 to be inducted into the Walk of Fame and have a street in his old Scarborough neighbourhood named after him.
