Swedish Radio Cuts British Music
STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP)--Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones and Deep Purple have been temporarily taken off the air by a Swedish radio station as soccer rivalry spills over into the world of music.
A classic rock station in Stockholm has banned all English music until June 3, a day after the Swedish national team's World Cup opener against England.
That means about 40 percent of the station's music archives is left idle, while American, Scandinavian and German rock bands fill the gap.
``AC/DC are all right. Even if they have some English-born members the band is Australian,'' programming director Fredrik Bojerud said.
The Web site of Rock Klassiker features a Volvo decorated with a Swedish flag on top of a British car. The picture is superimposed on a soccer field underneath the headline: ``Let's get them.''
The site also urges listeners to sign a petition against England's Swedish-born coach, Sven-Goran Eriksson.
``We want him to come to his senses,'' Bojerud said. ``If he's Swedish, he knows what to do on June 2.''
The station says it has about 80,000 listeners daily in the Swedish capital.

Im afraid Sweden AND England will be going home a bit early. Whoever finishes 2nd in their group behind Argentina will almost certainly be playing France in the next round.... |

Well well, I'm from Sweden and yes, the hysteria about the World Cup is really taking over everything... I say the same as you Gazza, I don't think Sweden nor England have a big chance in the group. Sweden played LOUSY today aginst Japan... We have some good players, but they never get it together in the national team. 
Regarding the Radio-channel, it's just aired in the Stockholm-area, so I can't hear it anyway... I believe it's pretty good though. (When it plays English music that is!) |
