Bidding on Zappa's Rolls
LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Bidders can rock around the block at next week's "Motors and Music" auction featuring a 400-car collection that includes Frank Zappa's 1974 Rolls Royce and Elvis Presley's 1974 Cadillac Fleetwood.
There's also a special 1967 Fender Stratocaster guitar originally owned, played and burned on stage at the Miami Pop Festival by Jimi Hendrix. The guitar was given to Zappa and restored for his use during concerts in the 1970s.
Dweezil Zappa, the late rocker's son, had it restored again, and it will be put up for auction during the May 31-June 2 eBay Motors "Motors and Music" event produced by the Kruse International auction house. It's being held at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.
Former "Partridge Family" star David Cassidy will be the celebrity auctioneer.
"Both previous owners were legendary and influential in their own right," Zappa said Wednesday. "As a historical musical artifact, this instrument is in a category by itself. This event provides a rare opportunity for rock enthusiasts."
Other items up for bid will be a black satin Rolling Stones tour jacket owned by Keith Richards, Buddy Holly's shoes, Elvis Presley's birth records and a variety of vehicles, including the 1956 Rolls Royce limousine used in the Dudley Moore movie "Arthur" and Frank Sinatra's 1989 Jaguar XJS.
