How ironic it is that I should find myself on a 'local' list of sex offenders when for the last 30 years I have worked tirelessly to help hundreds of people afflicted directly or indirectly by childhood sexual trauma and all the subsequent human psychodramas it leads to. I have always kept quiet about this. Until now.
Until now, out of respect for the police investigation into child-pornography on the internet, I have kept silent, and waited for justice. I think the decision to caution me was right and just. I admitted an offence without claiming extraordinary mitigation. That has left many free to comment at will about my culpability or my poor judgement. But surely it must be seen that I have always been an ardent messenger warning of the potential proliferation of dangerous pornographic materials on the internet, which - exposed to children or impressionable adults - could have an effect that can only be described as 'soul-trauma'.
What could also be described as 'soul-trauma' is putting a well-known celebrity on a 'local' sex offenders list after police spent three and a half months trawling forensically through eleven computers and other media and found not a single instance of child pornography. Neither have they received a single complaint about my personal sexual conduct. I understand now that research of any kind is now not permitted in the particularly sensitive arena of child porn. Therefore I admitted to what I regard as a technical offence - the use of a credit card on one occasion, and for research.
I have no argument with the police or the press. But I think the rules here with respect to the sex offenders register might be a bit askew. But then I suppose I would wouldn't I?
In your mind, put me on the list of wonky but well-intentioned liberal do-gooders if you like. But please do not think of me as a 'sex offender'. That, quite simply, as I and most other right-minded people in the UK understand it, is neither true nor just.

I hurt for Pete. After reading this, I wish I could communicate to him somehow that we stand beside him. I think he knows that. The 'sex offenders' list is an injustice in my eyes. I don't care if it's the
law - that doesn't make it right in this situation. Pete does not deserve this.
Pete may have needed to remove his entry for legal reasons and before the media snatched it up for their self-serving purpose. His voice needs to be heard. He did the right thing and needs a chance to share his thoughts and feelings.

Regular Drinking May Raise Rectal Cancer Risk

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - People who down at least 14 alcoholic drinks each week, regardless of the type of alcohol, may be more likely than non-drinkers to develop rectal cancer, researchers said Tuesday.
But what a person drinks does have some influence on risk, the authors note, for people who included wine in their menu of alcoholic beverages had a lesser increase in risk than those who stuck mainly with beer and spirits.
And the study found no association between alcohol intake and the risk of colon cancer.
Regardless, the increase in rectal cancer risk provides heavy drinkers with another reason to cut back, study author Dr. Morten Gronbaek of the National Institute of Public Health in Copenhagen, Denmark, told Reuters Health.
"Heavy drinkers should worry about so many other diseases and conditions, and simply try to cut down their intake anyway," Gronbaek said.
Cancers that originate in the colon and rectum are the fourth most commonly diagnosed cancers in the U.S., and represent the second-leading cause of death from cancer. Approximately one-third of the cases of colorectal cancer are actually cancers of the rectum, Gronbaek said.
During the current study, Gronbaek and colleagues followed around 30,000 men and women for an average of almost 15 years, recording how much alcohol they drank each week and who developed cancer of the colon or rectum.
By the end of the study period, 411 people had developed colon cancer, and another 202 were diagnosed with rectal cancer, the authors report in the journal Gut.
People who reported drinking more than 14 servings of beer and spirits every week, but not wine, were more than three times more likely than non-drinkers to develop rectal cancer, Gronbaek and colleagues report.
However, those who drank just as much but included wine as more than 30 percent of their total alcohol intake had a lower risk -- though it was still close to twice that of non-drinkers.
This increase in risk seen with relatively heavy drinking is as significant as other known risk factors for rectal disease, Gronbaek said, such as physical inactivity and low amounts of dietary fiber.
The researcher added that it is unclear why including wine may reduce the risk associated with drinking. He noted that the beverage contains ingredients not present in beer or spirits that are known to have anti-cancer properties.
The lack of a relationship between alcohol drinking and colon cancer risk is also somewhat of a mystery, according to Gronbaek.
"The tissue is rather similar in the two parts of the organ -- colon and rectum -- and one might expect the same mechanism in developing the disease," Gronbaek said. However, he added that previous studies have also found that alcohol has an effect on the rectum but not the colon.

" PITTSBURGH - Tommy Chong (news), who played one half of the dope-smoking duo in Cheech and Chong movies, pleaded guilty in federal court Tuesday to conspiring to sell drug paraphernalia.
Chong also pleaded guilty on behalf of his business, Nice Dreams Enterprises, which made a line of marijuana bongs and pipes. Doing business as Chong Glass, Nice Dreams Enterprises sold glass pipes and bongs that Chong acknowledged were used to smoke marijuana.
Chong's attorneys said he was accepting responsibility, but noted he was careful not to sell to minors.
"This isn't his work. His work is that of a comedian and satirist," said attorney Richard G. Hirsch.
After the hearing, Chong said he did not use drugs. "I don't smoke; I quit," he said.
The actor-comedian, who recently had a recurring role on Fox's "That '70s Show," said he planned to return to what he's always done: speaking "the truth" in his comedy routines. He was scheduled to appear in Florida on Tuesday night.
Chong said he and Cheech Marin (news) were back together and working on another movie; the two have appeared together in several films, including "Up in Smoke" and "Still Smokin'." His plea, he said, would be part of the new film.
Chong's plea came after federal Drug Enforcement Administration agents purchased his paraphernalia and had them shipped to an undercover business. Agents also confiscated his company's paraphernalia during raids of "head shops" in numerous states and confiscated "thousands of marijuana bongs and pipes" in a raid of his Gardena, Calif., business.
The raids were part of a series by the DEA in which at least 55 people were charged with trafficking in illegal drug paraphernalia. Officials said the investigation targeted the nation's biggest Internet distributors of paraphernalia.
Chong is the first person to plead guilty in the raids, said U.S. Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan.
Chong, 64, was released on recognizance bail, but must undergo drug testing and remain in the U.S. District Court jurisdiction of his Pacific Palisades home except to travel for work and court appearances.
He faces a maximum sentence of three years in prison and a $250,000 fine when he is sentenced Sept. 11. Federal guidelines call for six months to one year incarceration, though Buchanan said the government would not make a recommendation to U.S. District Judge Arthur J. Schwab. "
