Topic: £1m Stones plea sent to wrong Keith Richards Return to archive

Gazza
A Rolling Stones fan's plea for help fell on deaf ears when he wrote to the wrong Keith Richards.

Trish Richards was surprised when a letter addressed to her husband Keith arrived at her home in Sebastopol, Pontypool, south Wales, not least because he had died nine years ago.

But she was taken aback to see that the writer, who said he had seen the Rolling Stones perform live “many times“, was asking for a £1 million donation to rescue the Suedes restaurant in Jackson, Tennessee, which is currently closed.

Hunter Harrison had typed an address in Grosvenor Place, London, on the letter itself, but the envelope was addressed to Grosvenor Place, Pontypool.

Mrs Richards told the South Wales Argus: “He was really quite a quiet man, a carpenter by trade, and he was stone deaf. The American couldn’t have got it more wrong. But I had a really good laugh.

“The address is almost right, the house number is just a couple out. I just can’t see why he had Pontypool on the envelope.”

The letter explains that Suedes is dedicated to musician Carl Perkins, who wrote Blue Suede Shoes.

In the letter Mr Harrison said: “I think you realise what a travesty it is for this restaurant to remain closed to the public.

“I would be more than happy to take a million of the Rolling Stones’s money and make this a landmark for any and all to enjoy.”
