Egbert Who's playing that mean guitar? Rumour has it Chuck Berry was present at Chess Studios the day DTRA was cut. Was it Chuck or Keith?
May 17th, 2004 10:23 AM
jb Intersting question...I doubt it was Chuck as there is no credit given.
May 17th, 2004 10:36 AM
Monkey Woman According to Bill, Chuck walked in the studio when they recorded the track, but I doubt he would have given a hand to a band he saw as young white rip-offs!
The credits for the song are Brian and Keith, which seems the answer to the question. Both playing together like "someone's right and left hands", as I've read it described.
May 17th, 2004 01:45 PM
Fabio Hot Stuff KEITH was on rhythm guit, Brian was playing the Chuck riff.
This is one of the greatest ROCK'N'ROLL ever played in studio of the Stones!!!!!I love this r'n'r as much as I love my girl-
Some times ago I found on cassette the original version on DOWN THE ROAD...was a bad
recorded , don't remember the author, but was funny, It's a swing with the piano boogie ...
ciao
Fabio
Now if you wanna hear some boogie like I'm gonna play
It's just an old piano and a knockout bass
The drummer's man's a cat they call Charlie McCoy
You know, remember that rubber-legged boy?
Mama cookin' chicken fried and bacon grease
Come on along boys it's just down the road apiece

Well there's a place you really get your kicks
It's open every night about twelve to six
Now if you wanna hear some boogie you can get your fill
And shove and sting like an old steam drill
Come on along you can lose your lead
Down the road, down the road, down the road apiece

Well there's a place you really get your kicks
It's open every night about twelve to six
Now if you wanna hear some boogie you can get your fill
And shove and sting like an old steam drill
Come on along you can lose your lead
Down the road, down the road, down the road apiece

This is absolutely true. One of the earliest masterpieces of the Stones. It still rocks like hell.
May 17th, 2004 06:22 PM
glencar They did it in 1981 in Philly.

Absolutely not true. The intro and the turn-arounds are all signature Keith (uh, stolen from Chuck that is). Brian is domg the R&B rythm guitar behind Keith.

Gazza >No kidding? Is there a boot with DTRA????

yeah...theres a recording in circulation of the show in question (the SECOND Philly show - 26.9.81) which also included an equally rare outing for "Mona". Its quite easy to find.

In fact, theres just recently been a soundboard of this show come into circulation.
May 18th, 2004 09:15 AM
Mathijs It's also played in New Jersey 1981, and available on boot in SB quality.

26.9 philly
27.9 buffalo
5.11 new jersey
9.11 hartford

done more often.

Honky Tonk Man I too have always wondered who plays what on the studio version of Down The Road Apeice. I'm postive I've read that Brian and Keith take turns to do the lead, but to me it sounds like its all Keith.

If it's not all Keith, than Brian is barley audiable.

Mathijs This second show just might be the second worst show the Stones have ever done...only surpassed by the first Philly show! Man, they rehearsed for weeks at Longview farm, but they don't seem to know they key of half the songs! Still better than licks 2003 though....

exilestones@netscape Thanks for posting the covers for the 2nd '81 show. This picture isn't from Philadelphia 1981 and I don't think it's from 1981 at all!
