Martha Great review Nasty. However, the shows I've seen posted at TXbastardo have Loretta's top tickets going for $45 face. That seems odd considering what you are saying tickets cost for your show. Am I missing something here?
May 17th, 2004 01:05 PM
Nasty Habits Tickets for Johnson City were $37.50 for "floor" and $26.00 for "uppers". The place was one of those big 8500 type college sports ampitheater settings although it was probably only about half full. It was the single most "intimate" show in a venue that size I had ever attended, which was definitely another plus for it.

jb Thanks Nasty!!! By the way, the VH1 special on Bob Marley is great....I don't know why I never mentioned it before, but I always loved that one tape I have of Marley's greatest his....sadly he died of cancer from a melonoma that started on his toe!!!
May 17th, 2004 01:23 PM
Sir Stonesalot Hmmmmm....

I guess I'm gonna pass then.

Unless, of course, I can get in for free like Nasty.

Flea...It's at some place in DC that I never heard of...I think it's the 6th of Dec. I'll check into it and e you.

This is the show closest to us that we are considering catching (it's about 90 minutes away). If JW is going to tour with her and the Do Whater's it's got to be at some point along this tour if not all of it?! I'm hoping anyway!

Nasty, give Jack a ring-a-ding will ya? and get the skinny for us?!

Maaaaaaaaartha!

Nasty Habits Martha, I don't think that there's gonna be a tour w/the Do-Whatters unless it is specifically announced, and that sorta tour will play different venues, or LL will open for the Stripes or something. Inflicting Jack and his band of young rockers on Branson and vice versa does not strike me as the kind of thing that is gonna happen from ANYBODY'S standpoint -- if the bulk of the audiences are anything like the one at the show I was at we'd be talking some serious Dylan '66 shit going down. And that's not going to happen. It strikes me that Loretta is real tied to her traditional fan base and isn't about to go into the live arena with a bunch of "crazy rock and rollers" (her words, not mine) without some heavy PR behind it. And from a band standpoint, if she is just gonna call random songs out from her considerable catalog like she did in Johnson City there is no way that Jack and them boys are gonna be able to keep up with it.

That sounds like a challenge to me Nasty. I'd like to see Jack and the boys give it a try.....just for the fun of it.

You mean she didn't have a set-list whatsoever to perform from? How long was the set?

BTW, does this mean you aren't going to call Jack? :-)

Bloozehound SS & FPM = trendy posers

Loretta will respond to what her fans want if enough rock n rollers start showing up at her concerts and truely appreciate who she is. People like Nasty will help make this happen and it's a damn good thing.

Like Keith says the only thing that really matters in life is if the gravestone says "you passed it on"

It's great to see people like Cash and possibly Loretta passing their brilliance on to wider audiences.

Factory Girl I don't love Loretta's new album. But, saying that, it takes a hell of a lot to please me. Also, I still think she's had a very interesting life.

Btw, anyone have Patti Smith's Trampin' or Courtney Love's Swetheart? Reviews, please...

Sir Stonesalot You know Bloozehound, I was gonna reply with some silly name calling. But I'm not.

Why?

Because I'm a much better person than you are, and I will no longer lower myself to such demeaning levels.

Now, to Nasty...I figured this is what was going on. As soon as you told me the when and where of the show you saw, I understood.

Now lemme ask you this...do you think she was using Jack White and his celebrity with Van Lear Rose? I should state right now, that wouldn't bother me all that much. The end result is that she put out an album that I enjoy. But do you think it was a cash grab? It's certainly starting to look more and more like that to me.

Trendy poser. LOL! Yeah, I'm so fuckin' trendy. That's why I'm going to see the Chesterfield Kings tonight. It's the trendy thing to do.

Factory Girl Martha, I don't have Trampin yet. Rolling Stone gave it a mixed review. Plus, I tend to like Patti's earlier stuff better.

SS -- Good question!

Here's some thoughts.

I don't think it was a cash grab -- I think that it was both creatively and financially canny of her to agree to a project, and I also think it was a meeting of similar but not identical minds. It was Jack that approached her first, being such a huge fan of her work (the first time I met the guy he bought four Loretta Lynn albums off of me).

I think that in Jack she found a very sympathetic collaborator who wanted to make a Loretta Lynn album that sounded like actual music instead of an insipid Lynn Twin modern country bullshit production job. I think that she probably enjoyed, say, Johnny Cash's last four albums and Merle Haggard's last three albums more than any country her peers or she'd put out in a long time, wanted to find a way to do it, and did it.

From what I understand, she financed the recording of Van Lear Rose by herself without a clear idea of where the record was going to come out, and Interscope picked it up. I don't think that anyone was seriously worried about the results not selling, but it's not like it was guaranteed that something would work out.

With the exception of both Have Mercy Baby AND Bad Mrs. Leroy Brown (the worst sounding and performed songs on the record) I find the album true, believable, moving, and splendid, as much for her words and performance as for the performances surrounding it. In fact, the drums on the record drive me nuts -- I think that Jack made a rookie mistake by hiring his Greenhorne buddies to make a country music rhythm section -- the drummer in particular seems to have little feel for the music. His choice of Dave Sweeney as his slide guitar/steel guitarist was absolutely inspired, however -- that guy has the best music parts on the record. It's also my fave sounding Jack White production since the first Stripes record.

LL's career is characterized by surprising against the grain shifts and impulses to do whatever it is that she wanted whilst staying solidly in the country music scene -- there was a lot of controversy surrounding songs like "The Pill" and "Rated X" when they first came out and the former is a definite classic on the country scene whilst the latter was basically forgot until revived by the Stripes (she wouldn't play it in concert when someone requested it, but she did tell a funny story about how radio stations used to either send copies of it back to MCA or throw 'em in the trash because they thought it was about (and then she whispered) "sex"." Like half her songs weren't about sex already.

I think it is only natural that when she goes on tour she returns to her core audience, after all, she's got about as long a history as a performer as the Stones, and it's not like she's going to throw that fan base away by exclusively playing loud crazy tracks on her new album. Country music performers are notoriously reluctant to add new material to their live sets, and I don't see anything other than straight up business as usual in her only playing one song from her new record on the first night of her tour.

So, nah, not a cash grab, just a thing that happened that everyone rolled the dice on that's come up a winner artistically, financially, and probably personally (from all accounts so far the Stripes and Loretta find each other something of kindred spirits).

Have fun at the Chesterfield Kings, you trendoid! I haven't seen those motherfuckers for seven years!!! Who's opening the show?

Dirtbombs played Asheville last Wednesday to much enthusiasm. The wife's new band opened the show. Dirtbombs ended the night with "War Pigs". Wonder what THAT could have meant?

Nasty Habits So how were the Chesterfield Kings?

Did they totally slay with their awesome rock majesty?

What was the trendy poser quotient in the crowd?

I bet some of those in attendance sported much more careful coiffure than yours!

Martha Nasty I think you've nailed it as far as how this has all evolved between Jack and Loretta. Good call. :-)

Loretta is steeped in her roots and has been around forever. I met her when I was 9-10 years old. We went to the park we used to frequent to see bluegrass music shows. She happened to be on the bill this particular weekend. My Dad assisted her in climbing over a fence and I remember she had curlers in her hair. She couldn't have been nicer or more down to earth. I think with Loretta what you see is what it is.

Reminder to all who might be interested: Loretta interviews on Larry King Live tonight. I'll be taping this one.

Oh and on the White Stripes message board there are rumors that Jack might be going out with her in September but at this time these rumors are UNCONFIRMED. I'm keeping tabs on this.

peace,
Maaaaaaartha

Martha I just checked in at Larry King's website.

I evidently got mis-information last week.

Loretta ISN'T on tonight.

Sorry for the confusion.
