Mel Belli It has less and less "pop" with each tour.

Well you don't want it to sound like it has "pop". For maybe a better word the snare is supposed to have "punch".

Reguardless, he still can shake em up let me tell you. Man I was watching Four Flicks the other day and Charlie is a machine. He can wack those things with excellent speed and a real drive.

Mel Belli No, I like "pop." The kind of reverse-gated sound that Brendan O'Brien always gets out of a snare.

I like the way Charlie's sounded on "Steel Wheels" and the subsequent tour. Irrespective of the actual songs he was playing, he never sounded better before or since.

Yeah, actually I think it was during the recording of Steel Wheels that I read that Charlie had purchased some new equipment, and it turned out it was a new head for his snare drum. When he changed it some confetti fell out and he said "That's from Hyde Park."

I think drum sound has more to do with how you hit it. Some people are zen masters and you can hear it in the authority of the >THWACK!< . And there are few drummers more masterful than Charlie.

BE the drum, grasshopper!

Maxlugar Charlie broke his snare drum during the Sheppards Bush show early in the set. So it's been at least since '99 he's has a new skin.

To my ears Charlie lost a lot of the {Thwack} when he changed his style from hitting the snare and hit-hat at the same time, to hitting the snare alone. He began doing this in '75 and converted fully to this style in '81. It's not a good style for all the songs. He should mix it up.

You know what is the best recorded source for Charlie {Thwack}?

Jamming With Edward.

God, was he thwacking off there!

HA-HA! Thwacking off! You are correct, sir!

I've personally been very dissatisfied with Charluie's drum sound in general since '89 or so. It's way too booming, like canons going off, but not in a good way. The last time his drums really hit me was in '82... they kicked my ass, matter o' fact!
