yuppers, the live tunes and food, my 2 favs as well
I've been here since 93/94 when I first started my 10 year college career at UT hahaaa! I recall you mentioning you'd lived here during the 80's, didn't you say once you used to see SRV live alot ?
Speaking of which, I was downtown 2 weeks ago going to meet some friends at a hiphop club next to Antones on 5th, saw on Antones marquee that Tigerman Wilson and the fabulous T-birds were playing, so I took a 3 hour detour from the hiphop to see the t-birds play, it was a great lil show!

I love Willie too. I actually enjoyed his show more than Dylan's set. I have EVERY Willie CD...including all the duets and such. So, if you need anything, FG, I can sooo hook you up. |

i saw srv when he was a little kid playing in Paul Ray and the Cobras.....well, he was a teenager, anyway...and that was at the old soap creek saloon out on bee caves road. incredibly wonderful place, now a strip mall i think...damn shame. saw willie there a lot too, and delbert mcclinton!!! and joe ely, and butch hancock.....asutin had a great music scene then. armadillo world headquarters...man, those were the days, my friend!! |

I envy you kath, good times for sure, that was a bit before my time, but I know the lore of all those venues and the artists who played them, I love all that music, definitely the end of a great era
for good or worse, everything's really grown here over the past decade with the tech boom and all, north austins just turned into dallas or some shit, nuttin but strip malls and chain resturants bleh ZZZzzz, hell I-35 from Austin to San Antone is really like one long skinny city now, but Austin's still a thriving hotbed music/artist community, the film industries really grown, 3rd coast and all that, and then of coarse there's all the great music, music fests, resturants, bars, parties, ect... more cool shit going down here on any given night than in 99.9% of anywhere else in the nation, I'll take it!
What do you guys think would make up the best albums for a starter Willie set?
these two for sure

i got a "best of" or something the other day, and it's great!!
but your two choices are my two faves of his..red headed stranger is incredible. shotgun willie is a great starter record...

bumpin this thread cuz Willie's cool
also, Bloozehound, since your in Austin you might want to check out a band called "Grady" - its let by Gordie Johnson of Big Sugar with Double Trouble's Chris Layton & Reese Wayons and the bassist from Jeff Healy Band. They're really good. They rock. Trust me and check them out.
also, theres a bar in Austin that Ian MacLagan and his Bump Band play at every week. Mac does the old Faces songs justice. Its always a treat to see him. |
