Stoke 0-0 Gillingham

Gillingham held on to their First Division status after sharing the points with Stoke in a scrappy match.
Despite Walsall's 3-2 victory over Rotherham, the Gills' superior goal difference relegated the Saddlers.

Gillingham wasted chances to ease their nerves, with Barry Ashby missing from six yards and Patrick Agyemang failing to beat Ed de Goey when one-on-one.

The Dutch keeper smartly saved a Chris Hope header, while Gifton Noel-Williams missed a great chance for Stoke.

Stoke midfielder Karl Henry fashioned the best chance of the opening exchanges with a fierce long-range drive just wide of the target.

It was warning that Stoke were not about to lie down and allow Gillingham the points they needed.

And the visitors nerves were not helped by their poor finishing, although John Halls was unlucky with a deft chip.

Gillingham did manage to improve as the first half wore on and De Goey made a dazzling reflex save from Agyemang.

He then tipped Hope's header over the crossbar from the resultant corner.

The second half ambled along listlessly until the news Walsall were winning filtered around the Britannia Stadium.

Gillingham were forced on the back foot and almost fell behind shortly after the hour mark but Noel-Williams spurned a gilt-edged opportunity from eight yards.

Goalkeeper Steve Banks also played his part in maintaining parity with a stunning one-handed save off Halls' scuffed drive.

Banks' save inspired the visitors, who shut up shop and played out the closing stages with admirable steel.
