Topic: Is "Pool Hall Richard" about Keith? Return to archive
05-07-03 11:22 AM
TheSavageYoungXyzzy I sure as hell think so. It sounds like Ronnie's love letter to our boy Keith.

Plus, it's a nice cheeky implication that Keith wins at pool all the time by cheating!

-tSYX --- I don't mind but he wants my lady, too...

steel driving hammer Can't beleive I love The Faces and never heard that song!

Heres' the lyrics...

Pool Hall Richard

(Wood, Stewart)

Sweatin' hard, I didn't get a shot
All I did was stand around and get too hot
Knowin' all the people walkin' on my side
losin' all my money and I'm getting tired
ol' Bill he come a-runnin' like he's gettin' some
makes you kind of jealous but it sure is fun
I don't mind, but he wants my lady too

you know the crowd gets bigger as the word goes 'round
pool hall king was playin' back in town
Minnesota Fats standin' up at the back
tryin' to hide himself in a plastic mack
you ought to hear the silence when the kid walks in
his reputation's bigger than gasoline
I don't mind but he's tryin' to fill my lady too
Pool Hall Richard, you're far too wicked we know
Pool Hall Richard, kid you're wicked, we know
you broke my heart
same as you could ever do
with your yellow carnation and your pink satin shoe
you make me jealous but I worship you
one day soon I'm gonna beat you clean
wipe that smile right off your chin
everybody gonna drive from miles around
cuein' up to see me take away your crown
then you'll never never ever take my lady then

Pool Hall Richard, you're far too wicked we know
Pool Hall Richard, kid you're wicked, we know
you broke my heart
same as you could ever do
dig this
bam goes the brown, that's another one down
know they play much better when the sun goes down
bang goes the green, you're so obscene
your hands are dirty but your scent is clean
bam goes the blue, lock away your cue
the pool hall king is hustlin' you
bam goes the 8-ball, didn't see it spin at all
this kid can play, oh yeah

bam goes the brown, ooh another one down
know they play much better when the sun goes down
bang goes the green, you're so obscene
your hands are dirty, your scent is clean
damn the pink, one more to sink
gonna beat you someday 'cause you're makin' me sick
down on the black, at the back of the pack
aw, you nearly missed, you ain't so hot

Pool Hall Richard, kid you're wicked, we know
you broke my heart
same as you could ever do
you're breakin' my heart
but you're stealin' my tart
shut up

Highwire Rob TSYX & SDH, cool thanks for posting topic & lyrics!

I guess the American term "Pool Hall" is generically used because the lyrics are depicting the succession of sinking Snooker colored balls.

Fun to think it would be about Keith... I remember reading the tour contract rider that someone posted on Rocks Off a few months agoa table, it seems, is required backstage for the boys. Also, there was a Rocks Off header not too long ago depicting Keith and Ron chilling on the floor of the game roomlooked like the whiskey had taken more hold than the Billiards, LOL!

Always one of my fave Faces songs but cant say I've ever even thought of a link to Keith even despite the title..!!

it'd be interesting to know who wrote the lyrics..I always presumed it was Rod,although maybe it was Woody in parts.

The above lines are a bit intriguing because of the way Keith & Woody first became good friends. According to Tony Sanchez's book, Keith was hitting on Chrissie Wood (Ronnie's then-wife) and though he'd got lucky when she invited him back to The Wick until he was asked if he wanted to say "hi" to Woody who,to his surprise, happened to be there in the house waiting for his missus. The two of them hit it off great after that and the rest,as they say, is history.

TheSavageYoungXyzzy Right, Gazza, that's why I thought it seemed like Ronnie's take on the whole affair - the two of them play snookah all the time, and the nonsense lyrics that lie in there I think are really just them having trouble coming up for rhymes (this was during the Ooh La La era for The Faces, where they really got slammed for their lyrical non-prowess especially on stuff like "Borstal Boys" and "Cindy Incidentally", although they more than made up for it with the title track to the album). It is Ronnie's song, certainly his melody, and probably quite a few of his lyrics as well, since Rod Stewart was out and about promoting his sorry sell-out ass.

-tSYX --- Gonna make a break for the county line...

I'd say it's 99% Ronnie Lane with Ronnie Wood singing. But the songs that he didn't write on that album (and even some he did) are pretty weak lyrically.

This one, "Pool Hall Richard", though, looks like it's mostly Ronnie Wood with a bit of help from Rod Stewart.

-tSYX --- I called to you but I used a diff'rent name...

bez85 I'll agree the strong songs on that lp are the Lane songs..Ronnie Lane Is/was an English treasure..
