CS BOOZE BAND SOBER UP: Venue bosses warn rock stars

Derek Alexander

HARD-DRINKING rock stars such as Robbie Williams, Rod Stewart and Liam Gallagher face a sobering booze ban in dressing rooms.

Venue bosses are to clamp down on alcohol because they are fed up with sozzled stars going on stage too drunk to perform.

The Music Venue Association have told the Musicians' Union their members will have to stay sober.

General secretary Chris Jaeger said: "Performers should be allowed a round of drinks after their show and one round of drinks before they go on stage or during the interval."

It spells the end of rockers' outrageous demands for crates of beer and spirits to be laid on at venues run by the association's 140 members.

The M V was set up in 2001 to support live music arenas. It aims to tackle problems venue bosses face, including contract negotiations and "riders", which are stars' dressing room demands.

Riders often include vast quantities of alcohol.

Some of rock's legends have hit the headlines because of their booze- fuelled high jinks.

Rolling Stones hellraiser-in-chief Ronnie Wood regularly took to the stage after a bender.

And Rod Stewart was invariably drunk when he performed with The Faces.

Last week, fans of Christian rock band Creed lodged a 1.3m legal action claiming frontman Scott Stapp was too drunk to perform. Court papers claim Stapp was too "intoxicated or medicated" to sing and "appeared to pass out".

A Musicians' Union spokesman said: "The MVA believe their members are in breach of health and safety law if performers aren't in full control of themselves.

"A list of requirements sent to venues always included alcohol for the band and crew - but it's a problem now."

But the move has outraged promoters who claim many bands will ignore the booze ban or refuse to play.

Donald MacLeod, whose firm, Cathouse Promotions Limited, has brought Oasis, Marlyn Manson and Prince to Scotland, said: "I've had drunk musicians but I've never felt the crowd was at risk.

"Those trying to implement this have no idea about the music industry - it's crazy.

"I can imagine what would happen if I told Oasis they couldn't have a beer."

ALCOHOL and rock stars have always been a bad mix:

OASIS: Liam Gallagher turned up for a Wembley gig in 2000 after a marathon drinking session. His fans loved it.

JAY KAY, left: Rumoured to have been so drunk at a Brit Awards bash that he couldn't find his own table.

FATBOY SLIM: Confessed he drinks half a bottle of vodka before gigs... then downs the rest during his show.

GEORGE JONES: Country star stunned Nashville by singing in a Donald Duck voice before going into rehab.

GRACE SLICK: Jefferson Starship singer repeatedly asked a Hamburg crowd in 1979: "Who won the war?"
