stewed & Keefed O'Sullivan edges ahead

Ronnie O'Sullivan fought back against a determined Graeme Dott to move into a slender 9-7 lead after a fascinating first day's play in the final.

Dott stunned O'Sullivan as he won the first five frames before O'Sullivan hit his 13th century to pull one back.

O'Sullivan then clawed his way back to 6-6 but Dott edged ahead again thanks to a break of 86.

Dott missed a crucial red in the 14th frame to allow O'Sullivan to pinch it, then The Rocket claimed the last two.

It gave O'Sullivan's many fans a chance to rest a little easier after the Scot began in a fashion which suggested he was going to pull off one of the biggest shocks in Crucible history.

A 6/1 outsider for the match before the start, his odds were down to 6/4 after he built his 5-0 lead.

A fully-deserved lead it was too, with Dott mercilessly punishing any mistakes in a manner reminiscent of the way O'Sullivan punished Stephen Hendry in the semi-final.

But it was always going to be tricky to maintain such a high standard.

Although O'Sullivan was not dominant afterwards, his safety play was sound and he edged the crucial 11th and 14th frames, which could both easily have gone the way of Dott.

The Rocket is once again hot favourite for the title, and Dott will have to work hard on Monday to ensure his opponent does not build on his lead.

stewed & Keefed O'Sullivan close to victory

Ronnie O'Sullivan stretched away from Graeme Dott in the third session of the World Championship final as he built up a 16-8 lead.

O'Sullivan started the afternoon with a 9-7 advantage and won seven of the eight frames to move to within two frames of winning the title.

Dott's only consolation was in the 19th frame wheh he slotted in his second century of the tournament.

But the Scot knows he now faces an almost impossible task on Monday night to stop The Rocket.

It has been a remarkable turnaround from Sunday afternoon's opening session which saw Dott storm 5-0 ahead.

O'Sullivan has won 16 of the 19 frames since then, and needs just two more to win his second world crown.

Although the Englishman has not been quite as devastating as he was in the semi-final against Stephen Hendry, he has picked up frames with ruthless efficiency.

Dott had chances in the 20th and 21st frames, but O'Sullivan prevailed in both and followed up with breaks of 62, 46 and 61 to build the eight-frame lead which has put him on the verge of victory.

Hannalee Damn. I know the Rocket's a mate of our Ronnie, but I can't stand him. Or Jimmy White, for that matter.

stewed & Keefed O'Sullivan wraps up victory

Ronnie O'Sullivan romped to a second world title after a convincing 18-8 win over Graeme Dott.

Resuming 16-8 ahead after the Monday afternoon session, "The Rocket" needed just 20 minutes in the evening to take the two frames he needed for the win.

The damage was done in an afternoon session in which O'Sullivan won seven of the eight frames - punctuated only by a 106 from Dott, the Scot's second ton of the tournament.

Breaks of 92 in the first of the evening, and 33 in a scrappy second were enough to finish the inevitable win and give O'Sullivan another world crown.

The 18-8 scoreline was all the more incredible given that Dott had won the first five frames of the match.

At that stage, there was talk of the biggest upset since Joe Johnson's win over Steve Davis in 1986.

But O'Sullivan fired in a 100 break to get off the mark and took the next three to close the deficit to just one.

Dott was still playing well and was very much in the game at 7-7, but afterwards O'Sullivan began to pull clear.

He finished Sunday's play 9-7 ahead and by the end of Monday afternoon's session, Dott knew the game was up with the Rocket two away from the win.

O'Sullivan was focused and ruthless, and even the appearance of a streaker at the start of the evening session could not distract him.

The final two frames were won quickly as O'Sullivan completed the most convincing win in a final since Stephen Hendry's 18-5 win over Jimmy White in 1993.
