Diedre Why not just get a PAL-compatible DVD player? I bought one for about 60 bucks (Philips). Most major brands now do the conversion (at least if purchased in the last couple of years), even really cheap ones. The only hang-up is if you have an older TV; I believe the TV also has to be able to handle it. But my TV is a couple of years old and it does it, and cost less than $200. My Stones PAL videos look great. DVDRHelp.com has info about brands (also has hacking codes to make DVD players multiregional).

marko Indeed,get a dvd player,which can play both,actually its
up to YOUR TV not dvd player.Your TV is too old.
As much as i know, there is no "worldwide" videos for DVD´s.
You must copy it firts onto VHS.In NTSC version, then you can
burn it again onto dvd.Too much work.

Jumping Jack I could buy a PAL compatible player and in fact they play on my computer. The problem is that to trade PAL format disks in North American requires each trader to buy special equipment which is not reasonable. For that reason PAL disks are very difficult to trade in the states and Canada. NTSC plays fine on machines all over the world and is therefore the format of choice for international trading.

I have had a friend who has done 40-50 conversions in the past for me by running them through his VCR in some fashion, but his equipment is now in the shop.

I know it can be a pain to convert and I was thinking to perhaps send 5 at a time to keep the conversion task manageable and reduce what I need to back up on my computer at any given time. I put a large list up as an enticement to see if I could interest anyone in part of the job. There are some very good quality shows and some others that are not yet in wide circulation.

macdaddy, if you are willing to help to acquire some of these e-mail me at: sfenner1 at bellsouth.net

Thanks.

mac_daddy yes, I am willing...

but you really want to do this digitally - when you do it through a vcr, you are introducing an analog step into the processing chain, and this degrades quality...

I will send you an email this afternoon, Jumping Jack.

Ben Gurion You have to keep in mind there are many ways to do the standards conversion, some much better than others - but NTSC is 29.97 frames per second, 525 lines, PAL is 25 fps, with 625 lines per frame. Plus - PAL images are higher resolution, so to go to NTSC you will degrade the quality. There are also issues of movement and sound distortion. And the analog digital issue already mentioned. I'd just trade with people who have multi standard/zone dvd players.

pretty much, Ben...

but if you properly rip the DVD, parse the audio and the video, resize and then re-encode the video (setting the frame rate flags), and then mux the audio and video back again, the difference can be negligble...

doing all of that, however, is a pain in the a$$. I am happy to do this as an on-going project with Jumping Jack (and whoever else is into it), but there is no way I am going to commit to doing that entire list in any short order...

but if there is interest, I am down with the project

Jumping Jack Want to start with Marseille 03?
April 29th, 2004 01:48 PM
mac_daddy sure...

I am VERY interested in the 70s material you have, as well as the stuff from the 82 European tour. I am personally interested in collecting the material from 1969 - 1982. However, I am happy to work on the later stuff, too, as I know alot of folks are really into that stuff as well...

Jumping Jack, you have PM.
