charlotte Stadium to host major concert
Sources report Rolling Stones to perform
By John Yellig
Daily Progress staff writer
Friday, May 6, 2005

Scott Stadium will host its first major concert in more than four years this fall, and three University of Virginia sources said the act would be the Rolling Stones.

The concert, the first in the 61,500-seat stadium since the Dave Matthews Band played there in April 2001, is expected to take place the first or second weekend in October, when the football team is scheduled to play away games.

According to a news release, concert promoter Cellar Door Productions and Musictoday, a local firm that handles ticket sales for the Rolling Stones, will make a “major announcement” at Bryant Hall at Scott Stadium on Tuesday, the same day the Rolling Stones release their 2005 tour schedule in New York.

Representatives from the two companies declined to comment ahead of the announcement, saying they could neither confirm nor deny that the Stones would perform.

“I’m not going to speculate,” said Dee Larion, Cellar Door booking assistant and director of marketing in Virginia. “We’re still putting things together.”

UVa spokeswoman Carol Wood also declined to comment, but confirmed that the news conference will reveal that a musical act will perform.

“There is a media event on Tuesday, but I cannot confirm the name of the group at this time,” she said, adding that the university plans to host more major acts once the 15,000-seat John Paul Jones Arena opens in 2006. “The university looks at this upcoming announcement as the first of many important events that over time will take place at the university.”

Rumors about the Stones’ tour have been circulating for months. The Boston Herald revealed last week that the city issued permits for two summer concerts to be held at Fenway Park, but could not confirm the Stones would appear.

THE INSIDER / JEFF ELDER

Fall date at new arena to be revealed Tuesday

JEFF ELDER

Stones coming to Charlotte Some say the uptown arena will never bring Charlotte satisfaction. On at least one night this fall, they will be wrong.

The Rolling Stones -- who've rocked from the '60s until their own 60s -- will strut into the new arena as its first big act. Sources close to the concert tell the Observer that Mick Jagger and the boys will announce a new tour on Tuesday that includes a Charlotte stop.

Other details about the show -- including the date -- will be announced Tuesday in a live, televised news conference. Bobcats "premium" ticketholders will most likely have first shot at tickets, as happened with U2, the sources say. The 17,000 tickets to that show sold out in 59 minutes. Information on how to buy tickets will be announced at the news conference.

The autumn Stones concert will precede the Dec. 12 concert by U2, the band that some critics say supplanted the grizzled Stones as the "world's greatest rock 'n' roll band."

Not a bad pair of back-to-back shows. (Although one could argue it's now time for some youth.)

The band is expected to perform during the news conference at New York's Juilliard School of music. In the past, the Stones' tour announcements have been sideshows the size of Jagger's legendary lips. (In 2002 the band circled a New York park in a blimp emblazoned with their logo.) The Bobcats will host an invitation-only lunchtime party Tuesday at Brixx Pizza uptown. The festivities will be broadcast on the Bobcats' digital cable network, CSET.

This isn't the first time the Stones have helped to christen a Charlotte sports venue. In October 1997, the band rocked Ericsson Stadium, breaking in the Panthers' home as its first big music act.

The band played the Queen City two other times. In 1999 they played the Coliseum -- and top tickets soared to $250 apiece, highest ever for the venue. (An Observer critic raved that the basketball arena was the perfect venue to see the Stones.)

And way back in 1972, the Stones played the old coliseum. Their opening act? A 22-year-old named Stevie Wonder.

Happy Motherfucker!! Oh yeah, this is starting look very good for me here in Virginia! Charlottesville is a two hour drive for me, as well is Charlotte NC. One stadium show and one arena show pratically at my backdoor!

Here's a link to view Scott Stadium. This should be a very good place to see The Stones, as there's really not a bad seat in the house!

Gazza I find that story very hard to believe. Its too much of a coincidence

I'd seriously doubt they'd play as many as 3 shows in Munich again in 2006.

I'd also be surprised if they announce much, if any, details of the European tour next Tuesday. Plus its strange that Yahoo! seem to be aware of a tour itinerary and no one else does.

kahoosier Over on Shidoobie, they claim that the Palace ( a great venue)near Detroit has not signed secondary to the up front guarantee being so high and that Cohl is approaching Comerica Park (reported as a horrible venue) himself. I keep hoping for a midwest trio of shows...arena, stadium, theater soemwhere from mid September to mid October. For a while saw both the Palace and Comerica on, and thought add the Fox theater and boom I have the place and and date for my mainland extravaganza. Now it appears not so.

Any rumours yet on more in Chicago other than Soldier Field?

It appears they will be playing 3 different sizes of venues in New York and in the LA area. I would be very surprised, given the size of Chicago, if they dont do the same there. Havent heard any solid rumours though

It seems from what I've been reading and hearing that a major factor in why so many of the proposed shows are stadiums and not arenas is because the sky-high financial guarantees for the Stones that Cohl has been asking have scared many of the arenas off - the arenas' profits would therefore be much less as a result.

Therefore, it looks like a higher proportion of the shows will be stadiums than at first thought simply because of the band and Cohl's greed over how much money they're going to be guaranteed per show.

So you conceivably may get a half empty stadium rather than a full arena as a result just so that they can get their $xx million per show...and no doubt, the follow on from that will be less adventurous setlists and more of a reliance on spectacle rather than substance. Shame.

I hate Michael Cohl with a passion.

Gazza I previously deleted your post on that subject because it had nothing to do with what this thread is about. You've now gone and re-posted it.

This thread was stickied for a good reason. I DONT want it hijacked with off topic posts.

Please only post on this thread if it has some relevance to tour dates.

Thanks.

glencar If Cohl is cahrging through the nose for arena shows, do the arenas at least make money through food & drink sales? Is that enough to keep them happy?
May 8th, 2005 09:56 PM
Gazza I wouldnt think so, to be honest

Food and drink is going to be priced the same regardless of the artist, surely

If theyre being creamed for a guarantee thats twice as much for the Stones (using a hypothetical example) as it is for McCartney, then it simply may not be cost effective for them

they'd be making much the same kind of profit on that as they would for any concert or basketball game, surely

corgi37 Dont know how it works in the States, or Europe for that matter, but food and beverage at our venues are privately contracted. Who/what event is on doesnt affect prices of stuff.

Suffice to say, buying a buy and a beer is almost as much as actually buying a ticket to the footy. The owner of the Spotless Company, which provides the over-priced shit at Telstra Dome & MCG is a freaking Billionairre!

Thats why i say, in the name of "power to the people", people should bring little flasks of booze and smoke doobies instead of paying $6.00 for a light alcohol beer.

And, boo-hoo, my team lost this week-end.

exactly. Christ, can you imagine the price of a beer at a Stones show if they and Cohl had anything to do with it? Its a wonder they havent tried to tap into that market too!

Gazza I read that about a 2nd Soldier Field show too, but if the first show is on the 10th, they wont do another one the next day. No back to back shows anymore

Plus, I noticed at the time on the Licks tour that they avoided playing a show on September 11th. I dont think that was entirely coincidental.

Personally, I hope its correct and the only area venue. At least it would be semi-affordable and easy to get in.

I had a great time there last tour and it was the 2nd best show I saw of the tour.
May 9th, 2005 11:48 AM
Gazza I was at Anaheim last time too.

Even though my seats were nosebleeds, it was quite possibly the best stadium show I've ever seen them do.

twickenham was more enjoyable because I had incredible seats close to the stage and catwalk but I didnt think it possible I could enjoy a stadium gig so much as I did at Anaheim despite being so far away.

FPM C10 I can't believe Hershey is on the rumours list now. Last time they played central PA was 1964 - the Zembo Mosque (a Shriner place) in Harrisburg. 300 people showed up.
