Lucy_Bandersnatch I don’t want to upset anyone and I am not laughing at Mr. Richards’ pain and suffering, only the rather satirically ripe circumstance of the situation. Obviously he’s going to be okay if you WANT to believe the spokesperson for the Rolling Stones. I do. My advice is to stop wallowing in the “what ifs” and accept what has been reported by reliable news sources. Hopefully, he’s fine, but a little embarrassed, perhaps. My own theory is that Keef hoped this would quietly fade away instead of becoming what’s sure to be fodder for a SNL skit and thus the “delay” in an official announcement. This was on the local Chicago news tonight- all the Who, What, When and Where- but of course, no Why?

Breathe a sigh of relief. It would take more than a fall to take down Keith Richards.

FotiniD Lucy, I don't think Keith will want to keep this a secret once he's released. I'm sure we're in for plenty of palm tree climbing stories and I can't wait.

Had a concussion AND a jetski accident? Our guy is tough! Can't expect anything less from him of course.

Get well soon Keith!

Mercy dash for hurt rock star
30 April 2006
By DONNA CHISHOLM, TIM HUME and MARY JANE BOLAND

Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards is having top-secret treatment in an Auckland private hospital after suffering head injuries in a fall from a coconut tree in Fiji on Thursday.

The 62-year-old rock star, who was at a luxury resort on the exclusive Wakaya Island, was airlifted from Suva and taken to Auckland's private MercyAscot Hospital.

Richards was holidaying with his wife, former model Patti Hansen, after performing two New Zealand shows with the Rolling Stones, in Auckland on April 16 and Wellington on April 18.

Despite reports from the United Kingdom that he was critically injured in the fall, the Sunday Star-Times understands Richards is conscious and mobile and has not had surgery.

He could be well enough to leave hospital early this week.

MercyAscot Hospital staff refused to confirm whether Richards was a patient.

But the Sunday Star-Times has learned Richards was assessed by Auckland neurosurgeon Andrew Law and orthopaedic specialist Alastair Hadlow.

The decision to evacuate Richards came after he had a serious headache following the fall and then was involved in a jetski accident.

He has been kept in hospital as a precaution but is understood to have had brain scans.

He has also hired his own security guards.

A visitor to the hospital said Richards was last night sitting up in bed - wearing a colourful striped beanie - with his wife by his side.

Richards was first treated at a Suva hospital before being evacuated to New Zealand. He arrived shortly before midnight on Thursday.

Dr Uzzal Kanti Dhar, of Suva Private Hospital, said Richards was admitted there earlier that day.

"I understand he climbed a coconut tree and fell from the tree and got injured," he said.

Wakaya Club assistant manager Salesi Finau said he was unable to confirm or deny Richards had been involved in an accident, but said he was a guest at the resort last week.

"All I can say is both Keith and his wife, Patti, were here for about a week. They were here and they had a really good holiday."

The couple had been scheduled to leave the island yesterday, he said.

Staff at the news website Fijilive. com said they understood Richards was rushed to Suva aboard one of the light aircraft flights which serviced Wakaya, a 12-minute flight from Nausori airport, near Suva.

An airport source had reported seeing Richards disembark from the aircraft at Nausori.

Fijian air traffic control said a Medivac flight took place from Suva to Auckland on Thursday.

Fiji is a particular holiday favourite with the Stones, who wrote a song called "Fiji Gin" in the late 1970s.

Accommodation rates at the Wakaya Club range from $2000 to $7600 a night for a minimum of five nights.

The resort, owned by Canadian David Gilmour and his New Zealand-born wife Jill, has reportedly hosted Pierce Brosnan, Russell Crowe, Nicole Kidman, Bill Gates, Jim Carrey, Celine Dion and Rupert Murdoch.

Rolling Stone Richards falls out of his tree

by Ali Hussain

THE Rolling Stones “A Bigger Bang” world tour has resulted in a hefty thump on the head for the guitarist Keith Richards.

The 62-year-old musician was suffering from concussion after falling out of a coconut tree in Fiji during a break between concerts.

Richards, known for such hits as Tumbling Dice and Fool to Cry, was climbing a palm at the luxurious Wakaya Club resort when he slipped. “Picking coconuts is quite common on the island,” said a fellow holidaymaker at the resort. “It’s just that Keith had a bit of an accident coming down.”

Richards was apparently collecting coconuts with fellow band member Ronnie Wood. The guitarist, who has survived years of drug use, was said to be “a bit disorientated” after falling 15ft and banging his head. He was flown from the club to Nausori airport near Suva, the capital of Fiji, where he was treated at a private hospital on Thursday.

He was then transferred to Ascot hospital in Auckland, New Zealand, where he has remained with his wife Patti Hansen by his side.

Ronnie Wood was uninjured and is believed to have returned to Los Angeles with his wife.

Richards was visiting Fiji after playing a concert in New Zealand on April 18. The Wakaya Club is a magnet for celebrities looking for relaxation or a little emotional rescue. Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman and George Clooney are all believed to have stayed there.

Situated on a private island in the archipelago, the resort has 30 beaches, lush plants, deer, wild horses and rare birds. It can cost upwards of £1,000 a night.

The guitarist has been unlucky in the past during Rolling Stones tours. In 1998 the band had to delay a tour after he fell off a ladder while trying to retrieve a book in the library of his Connecticut mansion.

He damaged his ribs and chest but “had not been drinking”, according to his agent.

Another tour was put back when Richards cut his hand on a broken guitar string and the wound became infected.

The Stones’ next concert in the current world tour is at the Olympic stadium in Barcelona on May 27.

It is scheduled to be followed by 34 more across Europe. Last night it was not clear whether Richards’ fall would affect the schedule.

He'll be fine.

Mel Belli That "Fool to Cry" reference is bizarre!

It's another example of the little tics journalists display in these kinds of fast-written stories where the top is news and the rest is what they call "b-matter," or background. Another article in this thread says the Stones are "often" referred to as "the Strolling Bones." "Often"? By whom? Why, other journalists!

Sir Stonesalot Well-Wishers Gather After Richards Injured

Fans gathered outside a hospital Sunday where Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards was reportedly treated for a mild concussion he suffered after falling out of a palm tree while vacationing in Fiji.

Richards, 62, was injured earlier this week and flown to a New Zealand hospital for treatment, band spokeswoman Fran Curtis said in a statement Saturday.

"Following treatment locally and as a precautionary measure, he flew to a hospital accompanied by his wife, Patti, for observation," Curtis said.

The statement did not elaborate on Richards' condition or explain how he was injured.

But media reports in Australia and New Zealand said Richards hurt his head after falling out of a palm tree at an exclusive Fiji resort and remained hospitalized in Auckland.

A newspaper report Sunday said Richards was flown to Auckland's Ascot Hospital on Thursday after the accident. Hospital duty manager Steve Kirby would not comment on whether Richards was a patient there, citing the hospital's privacy policy.

"Nobody likes falling from a height like that, but he's never fallen from grace for me," said Dave Buchanan, one of several fans gathered outside the hospital Sunday.

"He still has a lot of grace and I'm glad he has mild concussion — nothing serious," Buchanan told New Zealand's TV3 news.

The Fijilive.com news Web site reported that the accident was believed to have happened at Fiji's exclusive Wakaya Club resort.

Resort employee Salesi Finau told The Associated Press that Richards and his wife recently stayed at the resort for about a week but would not say when they left or comment on reports of Richards' accident.

The Rolling Stones played a concert in Wellington on April 18 as part of their "A Bigger Bang" world tour.

According to the band's Web site, the Stones' next scheduled concert is at the Olympic Stadium in Barcelona, Spain, followed by 34 more dates across Europe.

Question: What's more pathetic:

a) Keith falling out of a tree
b) Ronnie wood crawling around the floor in a fine NYC restaurant, biting people's ankles (the event, supposedly, which promopted him to finally enter serious rehab)

I go with (a) being more pathetic. But I sure would love to have seen it.

I think the writer is trying to make a little bit of irony at the fact that he co-wrote "Fool to cry" and "Tumbling dice" - ie, he was a 'fool' and he 'tumbled' out of a tree.

More an attempt at a lame joke than having an in depth knowledge of the guy's work.
