And can you spot the difference between us & canadians? It's like trying to figure out the difference between you & NZers. The locals know but the rest of the world doesn't. |

I too live in the western burbs of Chicago. Still in Cook County and would never dream of moving farther northwest to say Schaumburg. The el is close and the drive on the Ike is not too bad to get into the city. Mostly go to the city for live music. I don't do the "concert" thing or see bands at that level, RS included. The best club in the area is in Berwyn, which is where I was last night.

If you want to see/hear live blues, please avoid the two Blue Chicago clubs. Tourist traps w/watered down "Mustang Chicago" crap.
BLUES on Halstead is probably your best bet.
http://www.chicagobluesbar.com/
While I won't go see Buddy again, his club is still a pretty decent venue to catch national acts passing through town.
Other decent non-blues clubs for live music:

http://www.schubas.com/
and the best blues band in Chicago plays at the Hideout every Tuesday night.

Jeez Bloozehound, I had no idea you were from Austin. I was just there last week. I went to see Jon Dee Graham who plays the Continental Club every Wednesday night. Some photos of Austin and Jon Dee below. He also plays with the Resentments at the Saxon Pub every Sunday night. He wasn't there last Sunday but we caught Stephen Burton and the rest of the band. Jon is outstanding, best cd I've heard in years. He indicated he'll be back at Fitzgerald's on July 2 for the American Music Fest. And you St. Louis folks, he's playing the first night of Twangfest in June, so yes, St Louis has something to look forward to.

dude saladmander, we barely missed each other, seems like everyone was out of town last weekend, I attempted to take miss blooze out Monday nigh to see the FABULOUS Dale fuckin Watson at Continental, but low and behold he's out of town (on tour & supposively recording his new J.Paycheck tribute album in Nashville for lil Darlin records)
So then she conned me into cruising over to Saxon Pub to see Bob Schneider, turns out he was out of town too lol
Next time your around let me know and we'll go see some great hill country pickers and shoot the shit |

haha, right on, that would have been something if I could have gotten to see Dale on his home turf as well. might have to make this an annual trip to A-town.
btw, I think Dale is back in town this week and might be playing with the Hacienda Brothers (Dave from the Paladins & Chris from Dave Alvin's Guilty Men) on Monday night. If I'd only have waited a week...

Almost forgot. I believe there is a museum where the Chess studios stood. Of course living here means I have not been there. I did however attend Junior Wells' funeral on the South Side of Chicago several years ago. That has to count for something. |

Sweet Virginia!
I live in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Radford Virginia. It's an absotuly beautiful place, the mountains, rivers and rolling green hills. It's a small city with a population of about 12,000, but there are four other towns within 10 miles of each other with about the same population, so it really seems like one big city. There are two universities here, Radford U and Virginia Tech, so there is a lot of partying and plenty of great music. I've traveled to many places, but to me there just isn't any place as beautiful as this area, with all the great scenery, travel five ours and you’re at Virginia Beach, another great place. The climate is excellent as we have four perfect seasons, it's hot in the summer, a perfect spring and fall season and the winter is nice and cold with plenty of snowfall. All and all, it's home and there isn't another place that I would love to live then right here in sweet Virginia!

haha, I'm in the Chicago area but we get all the touring acts through town. I've seen Dale numerous times up here. Fitzgerald's really is the best club for that kind of "Americana" music. Jon Dee Graham is my fav of the moment. Seeing him last week was the fifth time since last July. I'll have to make it back to Austin before long.

Yeah, nice shots.
I can generally tell the difference between Yanks and Canucks.
Canadians nearly always have 1 eyebrow, their faces seem darker, and there is a real subtle difference in their accents.
And, everyone should come to Oz once. I say once, because of two things.
1. Once, as in, you'll never leave.
2. Once, as in, we dont want you here.
2 weeks here Glencar is ok. You could just do the East coast. Going to W.A. would be a waste of time and money (air fares really dear). Start off in Melbourne, work your way up to Sydney (catching the train is fun!), then get up to the Qld/Nsw border, hang out at Byron Bay (you may see Paul Hogan or Russell Crowe - but you WILL see heaps of hippies and stoned-out-of-their-skulls ferals) then scoot up to Surfers Paradise.
There you go. 2 weeks that will live with you forever.
Or, haunt you. Depends what you drink, i guess.
So, lets see. Say, ya'll come here in Nov.
Melbourne - 3 days - Melbourne Cup carnival. Gotta see that to believe it. Twice as big as the Kentucky Derby, though no American would even admit/know. Nightclubs, pubs and discos to attack. So much to see. Perfect weather too!
Visit some wineries. See the penguin parade at Phillip Island. Visit the Corner Hotel, where Jagger played his 1988 secret solo gig, and have a beer with some "colorful" people. Visit the Casino, and get into a fight with a drunken footballer. A visit to Fitzroy St, St.Kilda is a must. The coolest bars and bistros in Oz.
Canberra - 1 day - Boring place, but some cool stuff. Visit the war museum. Tours of Parliament house. Pretty dull place though. Full of public servants like me. But, many, many drunken secretaries and clerks in city bars/pubs. Get your XXX videos here.
Sydney - 3 days - Check out the tourist traps. "The Rocks" has some really cool bars. Oxford St is the gay capitol of Oz. SOme really funky shops too. "Wheels and Doll Baby" being one of the most famous "rock wear" shops. Michael Hutchence used to shop there. Courtney Love. Guns & Roses -
Pretty expensive though. The zoo is pretty good. Australia's oldest. Keep away from Redfern! The Aboriginals will kill ya. And, girls, watch out for the Lebanese gangs. They love to pack rape white chicks.
Nsw/Qld border - 1 day/night - Check out Bryron Bay. Lovely spot. Plenty of dope. Plenty of horny, stoned, sufer girls & single mothers. Around Nov, its packed with schoolies, and virtually impossible to get a room, cabin or even caravan. Most places dont accept anyone but schoolies either, to keep the pervs away.
Surfers - 2 days - Nightlife and sexy girls make this a must. Perfect weather. Indy Grand Prix is on in Oct, i think. The track runs right out side the unit my Dad and i own! Shopping is good. The theme parks are great! Beaches are equal to any. Topless bathing is cool on all Aussie beaches.
Brisbane - 1 day - Might as well check it out. Not a bad city, but not really exciting. Casino is cute. Some ok clubs.
Dont forget the rules:
1. A shout is a round of drinks. Never, ever leave the shout without buying. You can be bashed.
2. No praising of the U.S. military might, how you saved our asses in WW2 or anything at all to do with U.S. football. We just dont care. And, you will be bashed.
3. Generally, you dont have to tip in restaurants. But, a little bit doesnt hurt.
4. We drive on the right side of the road. Not the wrong side.
5. A sheila is woman. Fair dinkum means "Really? Is that so?" and "Hello, ya bastard!" is a affectionate term.
6. There are no kangaroos hopping down the main streets, no one has a pet koala (they are not FRICKING BEARS EITHER!!). But, snakes are plentiful. Watch out if hiking.
7. Dont complain about shitty service. We generally are not a nation of servants. Just be grateful you get served at all.
8. Our beer is stronger than nearly all U.S. swill. It is better, tastier and makes every ugly woman a angel. It also makes every man who drinks it, a supreme fighter.
9. Dont wear check pants.
10. Take lots of pics, and post them here.
Go on, book that flight now. |

Thanks for the advice, corgi! It'll be tough keeping my trap shut about our military but I am a "when in Rome, do as the Romans do" type. I am leaning towards December (early part) but it depends on the situation at work & also what the Stones tour schedule looks like. I will look you up & even grab a few shouts. I live in the oldest city of Holland,it's more than 2000 years old, Nijmegen, it's a beautiful city in the middle of Holland, great parks, surrounded by rivers, woods and 2000 year old castles and buildings. the second world war destroyed a lot in the city, but Nijmegen still haven't lost it's beauty, and by the way, the Stones Played here twice in the summer of 1995! they played at the Goffert Park. it was my first concert in my own great city!
and don't you all know the Four days walk? every year millions of people from all over the world travel to Nijmegen to walk hundreds of miles four days long, and after that, everyone who made it get's a gold special pin. and after those 4 days there's a great Party with lot's of sex, drugs and rock and roll !!!

Glencar - I'll have a pot of VB. In Sydney, you ask for a schooner of VB.
Egon, you are coming too, aint ya? Another VB for Corgi boy.
December is great. Hot as hell, and all the sexy teen schoolies on holidays. National uniform for sexy girls is now mini skirts, pink singlets and thongs. Thongs here are what most people call Flip Flops. Singlets are sleeveless t-shirts. Thongs are called G-strings.
Who ever from RO comes here, i 100% want to go for a glug of the good stuff. We can go on a pub crawl, take some digi pics, and post them here.

Yeah but there's 1 thing ya gotta remember Corgi - it's just as expensive for us Sandgropers to travel east as it is for you guys to travel here. It's worth it though if you're into surfing, hot chicks, friendly people.
I wish we had a decent bloody entertainment centre though. We have that shitty Burswood Dome but that's due to be demolished within the year. Mick Jagger was the 1st entertainer to perform there after it was built - it was a disaster - really poor accoustics. New ent cent hopefully to be approved for construction within the next year, but it won't be ready in time for the Stones World Tour. My mate knows a couple of guys who work for the Stones - they told him that the reason the Stones didn't come to Perth on the Licks tour was because Mick refuses to play at the Dome, & there's too much red tape & conservative fuckers who'll complain about the noise if the band played outdoors - fuck it! I'll have to travel east again like in 2003 to see the Stones again. |
