" If you were at the Billy Joel concert in Omaha last Saturday, you helped set a record. "
Top 5 concerts at Qwest Center Omaha :
Performer Number of paid tickets sold
1. Billy Joel, April 28 16,846
2. George Strait, July 24, 2004 16,321
3. Shania Twain, May 25, 2004 16,208
4. U2, Dec. 15, 2005 16,134
5. Paul McCartney, Oct. 30, 2005 15,162
" The Piano Man's performance broke the record for number of tickets sold for a concert at the Qwest Center Omaha, which opened in fall 2003.
Fans purchased 16,846 tickets to Joel's sold-out show, according to data from concert industry trade publication Pollstar.
The figure reflects the number of tickets bought. It does not include the Qwest Center's 440 suite seats or complimentary tickets for record labels, promoters, radio stations and other groups.
Pollstar editor-in-chief Gary Bongiovanni said Joel's ticket sales have been "exceptionally strong" nationwide, averaging around 14,000 per market. "
Top 10 arenas in the U.S.

6. Toyota Center, Houston (119,901)
7. Allstate Arena, Rosemont, Ill. (111,627)
8. Verizon Center, Washington, D.C. (97,122)
9. The Palace of Auburn Hills, Auburn Hills, Mich. (94,754)
10. Qwest Center Omaha (91,498)

"Not everyone can do as many seats as Omaha can," he said. An expansion project last summer at the arena pushed concert capacity to more than 18,000. Pre-expansion capacity was 17,000 for in-the-round concerts.
Contributing to the record-breaking turnout, Bongiovanni said, was "pent-up demand" for an artist who hasn't played Omaha in two decades.
Roger Dixon, director of the Metropolitan Entertainment and Convention Authority, which operates the convention center and arena, said Joel's superstar status and having the concert on a Saturday also played a part in the huge turnout.
In addition, a number of fans who attended were from out of town. Joel's tour did not stop in Des Moines or Kansas City.
Although a secondary market, Omaha continues to be a major player on the national concert scene, Bongiovanni said.
Omaha's arena ranked 15th in the world and 10th in the United States in Pollstar's list of top 50 arenas for the first quarter of 2007.
Concerts by Bob Seger, Justin Timberlake, John Mayer and Nickelback helped the Omaha arena sell 91,498 tickets from January through March.
"Look at the markets you're up there with," Bongiovanni said. "Omaha's definitely in good company. It's obviously very successful."
