Keith Richards Slips Out of New Zealand

Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards, recovering from a head injury he reportedly suffered falling out of a palm tree in Fiji, slipped out of New Zealand on Tuesday, according to a news report.

All reporters and photographers saw during a five-day stake-out at the Mercy-Ascot Hospital in Auckland, where the 62-year-old rocker was reported to have been taken on April 27 after a three-and-a-half hour mercy flight from Fiji, was someone carrying in three guitars.

Photographers and fans were there throughout.

That drew scorn from at least one middle-aged woman reported by the New Zealand Herald who sniffed, "If it was Elvis, I could understand it, but not that tired old codger."

Richards suffered a mild concussion last week while staying at the exclusive Wakaya Club resort in Fiji last Thursday.

He was treated in a Fiji hospital before being airlifted to Auckland for observation.

"I can categorically confirm Mr Richards ... is no longer a patient in this hospital," hospital duty manager Geoff Sparks told The Associated Press. "He has been discharged."

However, the Herald said it had word that he had 27 security guards on his floor and four bodyguards in his room.

It said a fruit basket with "Keith Richards" on it - but no coconuts - had been spotted being delivered.

His wife, former fashion model Patti Hansen, was also said to be at his bedside, but she never appeared with a medical report.

The drama ended when the TV3 network admitted in its main news bulletin on Tuesday night that it had failed to get any pictures of Richards.

It reported, "He managed to give everyone the slip. This afternoon a spokesman confirmed he'd left the country."

Wellington's Dominion Post said Richards had fallen five metres from a tree at the exclusive Wakaya Club resort on a Fijian island after drinking vodka all day and rum at night with fellow Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood.

Despite that widely reported explanation, a Rolling Stones spokeswoman has only said that he suffered a concussion, without detailing how.

Wakaya is a resort hideaway occupying an entire Fijian island where the most expensive accommodation is a $10,000-per-night villa complete with clifftop pool overlooking the South Pacific, floodlit tennis court, and a staff of six including a personal chef. The price also includes all meals and drinks.

It remained unclear whether Richards' injury would have any effect on the Rolling Stones' "A Bigger Bang" world tour, which is due to resume in late May at the Olympic Stadium in Barcelona, Spain, followed by 34 more dates across Europe.

The resort's manager declined on Tuesday to talk about what Richards did at the island, where he flew with his wife Patti after playing two concerts in New Zealand over Easter.

"They're all gone ... around the world," manager Rob Miller said by telephone.

He declined comment on Richards' accident.
