Mick & the boys might paint town black this summer

By JOHN STEINBACHS

OTTAWA - After 40 years without Satisfaction, Ottawa is rumoured to be hosting the Rolling Stones for an August concert which would surely be this year's biggest musical event.

Sources say the band could possibly rock out the final night of this year's SuperEx in a Lansdowne Park event.

While no final deal has been announced, the park's management is now busily preparing to host the 20,000 people expected to come to see the rock legends.

A website run by the Rolling Stones Fan Club of Europe, It's Only Rock 'n' Roll or iorr.org, has the "rumoured" tour stop in Ottawa sandwiched between the first two concerts at Boston's Fenway Park on Aug. 21 and 23 and a Sept. 3 stop in Moncton, N.B. Neither the website nor Sun sources had a specific date for Ottawa.

But while the city plans for what would be one of the most memorable concerts in Ottawa's history, Michael Cohl, the tour director, producer and manager of the Rolling Stones, is denying that any deal has been put in place.

"That is absolutely incorrect," Cohl said yesterday in Toronto. "There are no deals of any kind that have been concluded anywhere. I have nothing to confirm."

Despite the denial, the city has been told that the band is planning a major filming of one of their concerts and does not want to have a large crowd present since more room is needed for the stage and equipment.

While Frank Clair Stadium has a seating capacity of more than 28,000, it's expected ticket sales will be capped at 20,000.

Along with the regular needs of a major concert, the city is also looking for room for a massive fleet of about 70 buses and trucks needed to carry all the necessary equipment.

Brewer Park is being considered as a staging area for the concert and film crew.

City workers are now organizing to bring in the number of portable toilets, police officers and other emergency workers needed to take care of such a large crowd.

The Stones are expected to hold a news conference in May to announce their summer tour. The fan website also has the band rumoured to be rehearsing in Toronto in July and August.

There's no word on ticket prices.

The Stones were last in the city in April 1965, playing the YMCA Auditorium.

The city will need to waive noise restrictions for the Glebe in order to hold the concert, but already Coun. Clive Doucet said he has no problems with the ruckus the Stones could bring.

"Holy mackerel, you've got to live a little," Doucet said yesterday.

M.O.W.A.T. Local radio in my hometown is confirming a Stones date at Ottawa's Corel Centre (cap. 18,000). However, I don't put a lot of trust in what they say on my radio station.
