Topic: Loretta Lynn & Jack White Return to archive
April 23rd, 2004 06:26 PM
sandrew I got my hands on Loretta Lynn's "Van Lear Rose" album, out Tuesday. Jack White produced and arranged the songs, and plays guitar and keyboards.

There's a very Stonesy song called "Portland Oregon" that freakin' rocks -- to kill for. The best song of 2004 so far.

A must-hear. Trust me on this.

Martha I've been reading the reviews sandrew and can't wait to get a copy of "Van Lear Rose".

Rolling Stone mag has a whole page review article on the CDand gave it 4 stars. Vanity Fair has a page/short article on them as well with a fantastic photo of Jack and Loretta together on her porch. He looks like he could be her son.

Here's an excerpt from Rolling Stones mag:

" If all Jack White did was get her writing again, that would have been enough. But he has juiced up her muse, keeping the mostly acoustic instrumentation spare and sweet, adding his electric-guitar kick to the fiddle, dobro and pedal steel. Listen to the way she yowls the bluesy sex stomp "Have Mercy on Me" dueling with Whtie's guitar until she sounds like Loretta Zeppelin--when was the time you heard anyone song with this much libido and fury? Let alone a woman pushing seventy?"

" Their one vocal duet is a killer, "Portland Oregon," where they sing about a hard-core drinking-and-shagging night: 'Portland, Oregon, and sloe-gin fizz/If that ain't love, then tell me what is."

I met Loretta many years ago when I was a kid going to Mocking Bird Hill Park to see Bluegrass shows with my folks. She was and is completely down to earth, kind and gracious. I remember my Dad helped her get over a fence from one area of the camp to another. Her hair was in curlers. Those were very different days then my friends. Those were real "no security" shows!

Ben Gurion Strange song. Heard it a couple weeks ago. Very cheesy 60's psychedelic then goes on to a very Beggars Banquet feel. Loretta's vocals are a bit much in the beginning - but she gets it later on.
