Topic: White Stripes on Conan This Week. Return to archive Page: 1 2
04-22-03 02:20 PM
Sir Stonesalot White Stripes are the musical guests on Late Night with Conan all this week. If you can't stay up that late, check it out the next day on Comedy Central. They reshow Conan at 7PM the next evening.

Girl, you have no faith in medicine....
04-22-03 02:22 PM
Factory Girl That is cool. Thank you for the info. All this week, huh?

Conan must be a large WS fan.

Sir Stonesalot So did anyone watch last night?

I have questions. I have observations.

Q: Is it just me, or does Jack look amzingly like Johnny Depp in "Edward Scissorhands"?

O: I don't know why, but I find Meg oddly attractive.

Q: Have The White Stripes ever been in sunlight?

O: Jack White sings a lot like Frank Black..except without all the screaming.

Q: What was up with the big black dude?

O: Night one was very interesting.

Q: Is Seven Nation Army a single?

O: I would like to see an entire interview segment with Jack & Meg.

Q: Where does he get those crazy guitars? What kind of pedals does he use?

Discuss.

Night 2 should be very interesting as well. I'll be up, I work till midnight...
04-23-03 02:04 PM
Factory Girl Well, I did not watch THAT-too late for my beauty sleep...lol.

However, I did watch a WS vcd on my new dvd player which plays vcds!!
04-23-03 02:06 PM
Honky Tonk Man 7 Nation Army is a single. Not sure if its out yet.

Jack guitars are all over 40 years old. The amps they use are old. Everything is old. They recorded the album on 8- track reel to reel tape.

Elephant is the best album since 40 Licks

Nasty Habits
So did anyone watch last night?

I acutally watched this morning. I taped last night.

Q: Is it just me, or does Jack look amazingly like Johnny Depp in "Edward Scissorhands"?

I can see that. I also thought that his bowler, and his skinny ass hat, and that whole oppressive air created by his bodyguard gave it a real droogy, Clockwork Orange feel. I also thought that the way the bowler held his hair in place around his ears made him look like a monkey.

I don't know why, but I find Meg oddly attractive.

That would probably be because she IS oddly attractive, and also utterly stacked. And one vicious drinker of Jack Daniels. And because she was decked out to look like some sort of Hammer Film version of Loretta Lynn.

Q: Have The White Stripes ever been in sunlight?

I have seen Jack walking around outside before dark. I cannot say I remember ever seeing Meg walking around outside before dark.

Q: What was up with the big black dude?

I did not get him, nor did I like him. I do not think of the White Stripes as the "gangstas" of garage and I was not sure what that entire performance was supposed to be communicating.

O: Night one was very interesting.

Interesting, yes. Great, no. I doubt that would have been the performance they would have laid down if they were only going to be on the show one night this week. I assume tonight will be the "sweet" side, and it will be interesting to see if the sets and costumes change.

Q: Is Seven Nation Army a single?

Do singles exist anymore? It is the "track".

O: I would like to see an entire interview segment with Jack & Meg.

Interviewing Jack White is maddening, but amusing.

Q: Where does he get those crazy guitars? What kind of pedals does he use?

I have a bunch of this information somewhere -- he told me a really funny story about an amp he had custom made but then couldn't use because it was too heavy to carry. I assume that he wouldn't mind as much, nowadays, considering he has access to giant roadies.
04-23-03 07:42 PM
beer That red guitar is an Airline guitar. I think it's actually a Sears brand from ages ago. When I saw them he also played slide on that acoustic/electric guitar that for some reason has paper on it.
Here's a site with a bunch of info:

TheSavageYoungXyzzy About their stuff all being from 40 years ago... the New York Times seems to enjoy jumping on these guys, they snuck in a rather well-made point, though, in the midst of the "we don't like anything" bashing - Jack White uses all that 40-year-old stuff and then an ultra-modern pedal that doesn't date any further back than 5-10 years ago and was favored amongst the virtuosos, a group which Jack White most certainly ain't a member of. (Neither is Ronnie Wood or, for that matter, Keith Richards, yet the Times sure as hell likes them!)

The Times really laid into them, blasted them, saying their songs tend to fall apart halfway through or just sound like demos... I don't think that they understand that in most cases that's rather the point. "Seven Nation Army" is alright, I like "Hotel Yorba" off their last album, that's got a real Stonsean country feel to it, yet a bit too upbeat for our boys to get into.

They're an interesting pair. Some of their stuff is really good, I just wish they'd stop getting such a kick out of their "we are avant-garde" image and play some solid tunes. They do have quite a few off this new album, like "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself" and so forth.

-tSYX --- I'm goin'ta fight 'em off...
04-23-03 10:05 PM
Larry Dallas I heard that the White Stripes are letting Loretta Lynn open a show for them in NYC. That sounds interesting.
04-24-03 12:30 AM
Sir Stonesalot You guys know that "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself" is a Bacarach/David tune. I wonder what Burt thinks of it?

well i don't know about jack's pedals but i do know that the licks, effect or whatever it is that he pulls of on the version of SBD on "Blame it on the Stones" that appears twice - first around 1.35 and second around 3.30 or so is simply mindblowing - a real stuttering sound - wild - and for that reason alone i would put him in the virtuoso class - it certainly sounds as virtuosic (is that a word??) as anything jimmy or jeff did - are they virtuosos (or is that virtuosi??) - virtuoso is a very loaded word

nasty - that bbc take i'm talking about - is jack's the only guitar?? - if so he has broken through to the other side - he sounds like johnson in that, at some points, it sounds like more than one person playing (or maybe that's just the effects pedals talking)

sammy davis jr. The best cuts on the new record IMO are Girl You Have No Faith In Medicine (Like the Kinks on steroids) and a blues called Ball& Biscuit or something like that. It contaims some great lead work - Jack obviously is a student of the blues-or at least KNOWS how to play blues with feeling. I wanted to hate the record just because of the hype, but it IS a really good record.
04-24-03 10:40 AM
steel driving hammer And here is the Bassline for 7 Nation Army...

Riff A

A 5 5 8 5 - - -
E - - - - - 8 6 5

7 times

on the eight time its

A 5 5 8 5-------------
E ---------8 6 8 6 5 3

then

Riff B

D 5 5 5 5 5 5 5 5 7 7 7 7 7 7 7 7
A 5 5 5 5 5 5 5 5 7 7 7 7 7 7 7 7
E 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 3 5 5 5 5 5 5 5 5

Riff C
(overdrive)

G 9 9 12 9 7 5 4----9 9 12 9 7 5 7 5 4 2
D 9 9 12 9 7 5 4----9 9 12 9 7 5 7 5 4 2 Play twice
A 7 7 10 7 5 3 2----7 7 10 7 5 3 5 3 2 0

So its Riff A eight times
then Riff B
then Riff C twice
riff B

Hope it helps now I gotta bail, gotta jet, later!

That's just Jack. He really is quite a good guitar player, and understands that the blues was never about virtuosity anyway. So he'll swing out some groovy licks, and then, he'll play like he did last night, on Dolly Parton's "Jolene", and beat the living shit out of his guitar in a hardly coherent rhythm.

And what kind of music do they call this?

Oh yeah!

Rock 'n' roll!

The Stripes
The Kinks
The Clash
Mooney Suzuki
The Stooges
Dirtbombs
Datsuns
Bob Dylan
Brendan Benson

:-D My dad and I have been talking about Dylan and the Kinks a lot lately. He saw them live "back in the day". My dad's a cool dude, you know. I've never really appreciated him the way I do now. Hah, I'm a daddy's girl..

Martha Thanks for posting the reminder about the White Stripes on Conan this week Sir Stonesalot. I did got night one taped but after having a pretty rough day yesterday I didn't make it through for last night's jam. I'll see if I can catch it on the Comedy Central channel as you suggested and try to stay awake for tonight's number. I like their version of Jolene..they played it at the Stones show.

I think Jack looks like death warmed over...in a cute kinda way though. Neither one of them has ever seen the sunlight...maybe not even the light of the full moon. That white skin certainly makes the reds stand up and shout now doesn't it?! LOL

I really dug getting to see them open for the Stones.

Have yet to purchase their CD's...still working on my Stones collection...HEY..a girl has to have her priorities in order!

And..how did my renewal for Rolling Stone magazine even make it in my mailbox today....I thought you had that covered SS?!

04-24-03 08:41 PM
Sir Stonesalot I thought it was hilarious last night...Conan introduces them "And now with a song from their new album Elephant...The White Stripes"...and they start into "Jolene"...which ISN'T on Elephant.

I also realized last night that Meg is REALLY tiny.

And as far as Jack not being a very good guitar player...bollocks. He's REAL good. If he WANTED to play like Joe Satriani or whomever, he could. He CHOOSES to play the way he does. Jack is a real American talent. I'll be watching for him to play in my neck of the world.

Martha I agree with you Stonesy..Jack is a true American talent. I hope you catch them live soon. Chris and I were very taken with their performance in October. You'll dig it.

And shit, I missed taping the show at 7...took a walk and thought I'd have plenty of time but it was over when I got back in......curses and drat.

beer did any of you see fridays episode? it was great! they played "Let's build a home/Goin back to Memphis/ John the revelator". Jack ran over to Conan's desk in the middle of the song and threw his guitar down on the desk and played it like a lap steel guitar with a slide.

TheSavageYoungXyzzy I think they're coming up here soon, I'm gonna try an' head out to see 'em. I like that kinda minimalist style, and just because Jack White's not a virtuoso doesn't mean he ain't a kickass guitar player.

I've never been up late enough for Conan this past week... tooooo much damn work.
