JACKSON, Miss. -- Rolling Stones keyboardist Chuck Leavell will read to second graders on Wednesday as part of a nationwide book relief effort for students affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

"All of the libraries and schools that were devastated in the hurricane are suffering for the books that they need to get to children and I am very proud to be apart of this to restore it," Leavell said Tuesday.

Leavell, an avid conservationist and tree farmer, will read his children's book, "The Tree Farmer," which he wrote with Nicholas Cravotta, to youngsters at DeLisle/Pass Christian Elementary School.

About 10,000 copies of Leavell's book and 100,000 other new books will be given to students through a donation from The Abundant Forests Alliance. The AFA donated the books to First Book, a nonprofit organization that provides books to children in need.

First Book began Book Relief after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, calling for book publishers and other organizations to supply a goal of 5 million books to children, libraries and schools affected by the Gulf Coast hurricanes, said First Book CFO Jane Robinson.

"For the kids that lost everything, the books serve multiple categories. It allows their imagination to begin to rise up again. It's something new. It makes them smile. It creates a quiet hope for the future because they are now able to have something brand new," Robinson said.

Since its inception in 1992, First Book has distributed more than 40 million books to children in over 1,300 communities, Robinson said.

Yeah, Mick would want to read all best-sellers
and Chuck would try to get him to read some
lesser-known great books.

Saint Sway I cant believe people are mocking this. Personally I think Chuck is doing a wonderful thing. And he should be commended for it!

of course, hes still no Mac or Stu. Hell, Stu would of single handedly rebuilt the levee's by now !!! But Chuck is doing the best he can in this situation - reading to children about trees. Good for him!

Certainly a more worthwhile endeavor than his piano playing during Rolling Stones concerts.
