Spru These aren't necessarily my personal favorites of the 90s (some are) but rather the top ten defining albums of the defining bands/artists of the decade:

U2 - Achtung Baby
Pearl Jam - Vs.
Oasis - Definitely Maybe
RHCP - Californication
Stones - Voodoo Lounge
Petty - Wildflowers
Dr. Dre - The Chronic
Snoop - Doggystyle
2Pac - All Eyez On Me
Notorious BIG - Ready To Die

This album was unoffically released in the 80's. . .doesn't belong in the 90's categories.

MarkP I cheated..more than 10. My criteria was if I played the cd's a lot when I got them, and if I still look forward to playing them now. I was amazed how fast I could crank out the list below (5 minutes). It was good decade for music from both new folks and veterans.

Nanci Griffith – Other Voices Too
The Mavericks – Trampoline
Los Lobos - Kiko
Lucinda Williams – Car Wheels
Rolling Stones – Stripped
Buena Vista Social Club (first one with Ry Cooder)
McCoy Tyner – The Turning Point
Branford Marsalis – Crazy People Music
Cassandra Wilson – New Moon Daughter
U2 – Achtung baby
R.E.M. – Automatic for the People
Beck – Midnite Vultures
Massive Attack – Mezzanine
Nirvana – Nevermind
Radiohead – OK Computer
Pearl Jam – Ten

Beatles – Anthology Vol. 1-3 (a reissue, but with different versions of the old classics)

3. Liz Phair - Exile In Guyville

I was waiting for someone to mention this talentless poseur, who lived on her physician father's largess, but mentioned to a local Chicago rag, in one of the first interviews she ever gave, right before Guyville came out, that she had to live on peanut butter & jelly sandwiches in a decrepit Wicker Park apartment. She graduated from one of the premier high schools in the Chicago suburbs, and attended one of the premier liberal arts colleges in the midwest, but initially pretended to humble beginnings.

Paul Natkin, the Stones tour photographer, once indicated to me that the "joke" about Guyville was that the record was actually only Phair's demo versions of songs, and that it was not originally meant to be the final recording.

The only song on Guyville that IMO is barely listenable is "Never Said." Bon Jovi and Aerosmith have forgotten more about rock and roll than Liz Phair will ever know. Brian Jones sings better today, more than thirty years after his death, than Liz Phair does.

Shit!! SURELY, she could not have written a good album with those educational credentials. I can't listen to Liz Phair anymore. Come to think of it, I can't listen to the Stones anymore either...

Dan I really liked the Tabitha Soren/Liz Phair MTV interview - I don't remember what either of them said but it had some cool visuals.

My point was that she pretended she didn't have the credentials. It's sort of like Jim Morrison pretending that his father was deceased, instead of admitting, during the Vietnam War, that his father was an admiral.
