Topic: Any Jam Fans Here? Return to archive
April 20th, 2004 03:35 PM
Honky Tonk Man Recently bought the Jam compilation called The Sound Of The Jam. I always liked A Town Called Malice and That's Entertainment, but this band was great and I really don't think they get all the praise they deserve. Every song on the cd is great and their debut single, In The City is one of the best punk songs I've heard. Certainly in the UK, they were more commercially successful than the Clash. They had hit single after single.

Paul Weller of course went on to The Style Council and a successful solo career, but he was at his best with The Jam.

What’s everyone else’s view?

jb Very overrated....could not listen to that crap if you paid me.
April 20th, 2004 03:56 PM
Sir Stonesalot I really liked the Jam. Paul Weller has mad talent as a songwriter.

My only problem with them is that they are so fuckin' SERIOUS. They were completely humorless. A small complaint for sure, but big enough for me to keep them from being a really "great" band in my eyes.

Corgi was very serious at one time as well. He is no longer serious and is a great man. SS, aren't you very serious also?
April 20th, 2004 04:05 PM
Sir Stonesalot I think that people who don't know me might think I'm serious.

The folks who know me would laugh at the suggestion that I have a single serious bone in my body.

Quite frankly, I could care less.

Joey " Corgi was very serious at one time as well. He is no longer serious and is a great man. SS, aren't you very serious also? "

Corgi is a Living Legend and I plan to shake his hand someday .....................

Stoney is EXTREMELY serious -- Probably due to the fact that he lives in Central Pennsylvania ( It's something that they put in the water over there )

Man , You said it my Jewish Brother .

Somebody from this board once was very kind enough to send me a " Jam Starter Kit " and I thought the dreck was absolutely abysmal .........................No WONDER the band never made it big in the United States !!!!!!!!

Even today in the UK they are considered a " Poor Man's WHO " and I don't have any respect for anything or anyone that is a " Poor Man's Anybody " !

Give Me Jagger/Richards , Watts , Townshend , Daltrey ANYDAY !!!! Oh , THE CLASH too !!!!

Word !

Sniffy !
April 20th, 2004 08:08 PM
glencar Oh dear. The Jam outdid the Who in every way whilst they were together. Weller has been seen with one R. Wood a lot lately.

I'm sorry Stoney, I was among those who thought you were too serious.

I would like to meet you and drink some beers one day in the next tour.

Cheers!

New Barbarian If you find it at reasonable price, get their 5-CD box called "Direction Reaction Creation". It's pretty much all great. If you need just one album I'd recommend "All Mod Cons", one of my favourite albums of all time (including Stones). Anyways just avoid "This Is The Modern World" and you can't go wrong.

jpenn11 Wonderful band. Needed a Mick Taylor though . . .

More seriously, how could you say they were too serious? They had the Batman theme on their first album. With no horns. They also had a midtrack insert of "beans, beans their good for your heart . . . " on their next album. Maybe they weren't musically funny thoughout, but who besides Bill Wyman really is?

Hopefully, Going Underground and News of the World are on the collection. I think those were singles, not album tracks. And Down in a Tube Station worked both on the album and live.

Style Council? What's that?

scratched I bought their Greatest Hits a few years ago. I think the songwriting (especially the lyrics) is excellent but the production sounds horrible and dated. I prefer Weller's solo stuff.
April 21st, 2004 10:44 AM
scratched The Style Council is Paul Weller's much underated '80s funk soul collective he formed after the Jam split. Not everybody's cup of tea, mind.

Being one of the resident Old Coots here, I got into the Jam when they were actually still putting out albums. And I'm pretty sure I had "This Is The Modern World" and that I liked it...right now all I can recall is the title track, which was good. Is that the one that has their cover of the Kinks' "David Watts" on it? I always liked their covers more than their own songs.

I never put them in the pantheon of great bands. Too limited. And WAY too derivative - the whole "let's bring back the Mod movement" thing - well, what the hell does that mean to someone from Pennsylvania? We don't HAVE Mods or Rockers here. The big battle on Brighton Beach would be between Amish and Mennonite factions.

Their sound was severely limited by Paul Weller's voice and their strict use of Rickenbacker guitars (largely because they LOOKED cool) and the resulting brittle, top-end brightness. (Hey, _I_ play a Rick, and I got it because it looked cool) Maybe they've been remastered since then, but the original albums sounded shitty. And they were WAAAAY too serious - they stole the Batman Theme from the Kinks, who used to do it in THEIR live appearances, and the "beans" thing is probably a reference to "The Who Sell Out". So even their jokes were serious, academic, and stolen.

SS and I watched a whole DVD full of Jam videos a while ago. When it first started I thought "Cool! I forgot about these guys!" and by the end of it I rememembered why I forgot about them.

"David Watts" is from "All Mod Cons", actually. The Jam (Paul Weller) is one of the few artists from the British punk movement to make some good music after album or two. The only other that comes to mind now is The Clash. Important thing to get the big picture is to check also Wellers latter output in Style Council and solo albums that are drastically different than Jam albums.
April 21st, 2004 01:43 PM
jpenn11 Yes, I too saw them when they were still putting out albums. Stopped following them after they put out the single "Going Underground". (That's why I never heard the Style Council.)

The Batman theme didn't come from just the Kinks. The Who used to do that as well. My recollection is that The Jam's was a bit more breakneck speed and, if you can believe it, less reverential.

Also, I don't think references to musical influences makes a band "serious, academic, and stolen". I doubt you would say that about KR and his Chuck Berry riffs. I think a serious band would have found something more "serious" to cover.

While the beans theory might be true, the point is they stuck a few things in between the tracks and, while "angry" throughout the music, showed they did not take themselves completely seriously.

As for the referential/derivative stuff, I think that is part of how they were distinguished from the punk movement. They actually respected the Stones, Kinks, Who and Yardbirds, much the way these bands respected the blues, R&B, etc. music that inspired them.

All that being said, The Jam is not a band I would return to today--now, the Raspberries on the other hand . . .

jb The Candy Man

Who can take a sunrise
Sprinkle it with dew?
Cover it in chocolate
And a miracle or two
The candyman
The candyman can
The candyman can
Cause he mixes it with love
And makes the world taste good

Who can take a rainbow
Wrap it in a sigh?
Soak it in the sun
And make a strawberry pie
The candyman
The candyman can
The candyman can
Cause he mixes it with love
And makes the world taste good

The Candyman Can
Cause verything he bakes
Satisfying and delicious
Talk about your childhood wishes
You can even eat the dishes!

Who can take tomorrow
Dip it in a dream?
Separate the sorrows
And collect up all the cream
The candyman
The Candyman can
The candyman can
The candyman can
Cause he mixes it with love
And makes the world taste good
And the world tastes good

Cause the Candyman thinks it should
Cause the Candyman thinks
Cause the Candyman thinks it should

Candy Man Blues
by Mississippi John Hurt

Well all you ladies gather 'round
That good sweet candy man's in town
It's the candy man
It's the candy man

He likes a stick of candy just nine inch long
He sells as fast a hog can chew his corn
It's the candy man...

All heard what sister Johnson said
She always takes a candy stick to bed

Don't stand close to the candy man
He'll leave a big candy stick in your hand

He sold some candy to sister Bad
The very next day she took all he had

If you try his candy, good friend of mine,
you sure will want it for a long long time

His stick candy don't melt away
It just gets better, so the ladies say

Agree with ya 100%. Became the darlings of the politically self righteous UK music press too much for my liking and it showed. Plus that whole mods vs rockers revival nonsense in the UK in the late 70's/ early 80's (after the "Quadrophenia" movie came out) was so ludicrous it was almost beyond laughable.

I thought they were a very good singles band. A bit overrated albums-wise. I also thought the Style Council were rubbish but some of Weller's solo stuff is pretty good.
