Townshend fights depression

By David Brown

SHAMED rock star Pete Townshend is being treated at the Priory clinic for depression.

The Who guitarist's health crisis was triggered after a powerful TV show last month showed his arrest for viewing a paedophile website.

Friends fear it could also set off his previous addictions to drink and drugs.

One pal said yesterday: "Pete is in a bad way and the documentary has done him no favours at all by raking this up.

"He feels he's being punished all over again and that he is never going to escape the stigma of being a paedophile even though he denies he is one.

"We just hope he doesn't go off the rails. We are worried he might turn to drugs again to blot it all out."

Townshend, 58, is a voluntary outpatient at the £500-a-day Priory in Roehampton, Surrey, near his £8million mansion in Richmond.

Doctors there are skilled in treating troubled celebrities, such as former patients Michael Barrymore and ex-footballer Stan Collymore.

Patients can be dealt with on a one-to-one basis or go into group therapy sessions.

Townshend has already publicly revealed he contemplated suicide after anti-child porn cops from Operation Ore arrested him in January 2003.

Detectives found he had used his credit card to access Internet filth. He was cautioned and placed on the Sex Offenders' Register for five years. He claimed he was researching paedophilia for an autobiography he was writing.

And he insisted he had been the victim of sex abuse while in the care of his maternal grandmother Emma Hindley and has been haunted by it ever since.

He has tried to come to terms with those events but once admitted: "I was damaged, the damage was done. I can't get in, even in deep therapy."

Now pals say his dark moods have returned after the hard-hitting BBC2 show Police Protecting Children.

It showed him close to tears as he was taken into custody at Twickenham police station, south-west London. It also featured a sound recording of his police interview. A pal of Townshend said: "He has felt nothing but shame since his arrest and feels the public will never view him in the same light again.

"The whole experience has been a massive bodyblow to him. He knows he has been a fool and feels totally crushed."

In February Townshend admitted to nerves as he gave his first gig in two years at a Royal Albert Hall charity concert with fellow Who survivor Roger Daltrey.

He has also spoken about his anguish over the death of bandmate John Entwistle who had a fatal heart attack after a cocaine-fuelled romp with a hooker in Las Vegas in 2002.

Townshend confesses his own rock star addictions to booze and drugs in the band's heyday almost killed him - as it did Who drummer Keith Moon.

Townshend was downing three bottles of brandy on stage and even drunkenly slept in rubbish skips when his rock opera Tommy was playing in New York in 1993.

He became hooked on a tranquilliser drug which he took to conquer his alcoholism and also used cocaine and heroin before finally beating drugs in 1982.

The rocker formed the Double O charity to help other addicts, but is still haunted by his own cravings.

"We just hope the Priory can sort him out," said a pal.

sirmoonie Nice hack journalism in there, starting with the title.

Gazza, what is that from?
April 19th, 2004 05:55 PM
Ten Thousand Motels Well it kind of reminds me of the Jose Padillo case here in the USA. The "YOU ARE GUILTY WHEN WE ACCUSE YOU" attitude. Well I guess Padillo doesn't have an actual case as the Bush Administration is now the "LAW".

sirmoonie The differences between the Padilla and Townshend situations are chasmic in nature, starting with the massive canyon in between their respective culpability.

Motsie, I really need to get a hold of some of that acid you are on. Seriously, dude, send me a sheet of that stuff.

Yeah....me too! I haven't taken acid in years. Although I'm not necessarily opposed to it.

sirmoonie So are you categorically refusing, here on the record, to provide me with any acid? Is that your representation to the members of the board at this time, sir?

Martha "And he insisted he had been the victim of sex abuse while in the care of his maternal grandmother Emma Hindley and has been haunted by it ever since.

He has tried to come to terms with those events but once admitted: "I was damaged, the damage was done. I can't get in, even in deep therapy."

Haunted by it...yes that's exactly what happens to victims of sexual abuse. I know this all too well. I am a survivor myself and cannot begin to express how my life has been affected from the abuse that was perpetrated on me as a child.

I finally was able to go "in deep" this past year (began August 6th) and almost had to be hospitalized during the worst of it. I was exhausted, unable to care for myself and had no appetite whatsoever. I cried everyday at least once and sometimes for long periods of time. I never felt such deep sadness before, it was profound. I had to lie down all the time it was as though I had the flu or some illness, I just had no energy and felt sick each time the feelings would come up, which was daily.

Allowing myself to finally go through the grieving process was one of the best things I've ever given myself and it also stirred up more memories of abuse that had happened when I was pre-verbal, which are termed in therapy as "body memories". I still do not know the perpetrators identity from those preverbal memories, I got too scared and stopped the process the night I knew the person' face was going to be revealed during one of the a body memory episodes. I freaked out and felt I couldn't handle knowing yet. I know the info will wait for me until I am ready to face it though.

My loving husband, who is also a survivor of family of origin sexual abuse, took wonderful care of me during this time and is still doing that as I am regaining my strength. I am very blessed to be married to someone who understands and who is willing to care for me in this way.

If you know someone or you yourself have been abused, do not be afraid to go out and get the loving, supportive help when you feel it is time to work through the incredible pain that goes along with having been abused.

Help is available. Grieving will heal the hurt no matter how horrific or subtle it was. You just have to allow yourself tthe time it takes to go through it. Grieving the loss has a time-line of it's own you are not in control of it. Believe me when I say that there are people who care and who understand as perhaps few others can and who can help you through this trauma. Don't let this awful legacy take you down all the way.

I've been coming through my deep grieving process (which started August 6th of last year) and out the other side since sometime in early January. The most recent thing that I've had to face is that I have now (since this past weekend) separated from my family in order to take better care of myself (I have a verbally abusive parent who can no longer be around). It has not been an easy thing for me to do. Yet, I am feeling stronger and better about myself than ever before in my entire life. I do not feel like a vicitm or a horrible person anymore. I am not living in shame 24/7.

I understand why Petey is so stricken by all of this. I had to learn it was NOTmy fault that I was the victim of this abuse (or any abuse that happened in my childhood). I also learned that the victim typically believes they are to blame for whatever happened and (still happens to them) and internalizes this as shame which eats us alive with self-hate and self-doubt. I pray Petey finds the support and love he must take in order to heal from the abuse he was subjected to.

I am not doing my healing work alone btw, I am in Al-Anon and see a counselor and then I come here to take a break and get my music fix and chat with my wonderful friends on the board. You guys are so great!

Music can be a very healing medicine as well. It has been an intricate part of my healing process.....all aspects of it, including sending music out to many of you. Music lifts my spirits like nothing else can. :-)

I know this is a very personal thing to share on the board, but if anyone else might be in my shoes and reads this and it helps them at all, it is worth it to me to be frank in this way. I remember feeling so alone for too long with all this ugliness. I remember feeling hopeless and wanting to die.

I also want to publicly offer my love and support to Petey. I told Pino at the Rock Hall the day we met him how we believed in Petey all the way and didn't doubt for one minute in his innocence. It felt so good to have the opportunity to tell him that. He was very open about speaking about it with us. :-)

Just know if you are a survivior of sexual or any type of abuse that you are not alone.

May you all be blessed.

With love, peace and kindness to you all,
Martha

Thank you Gypsy. You are a dear. I know it is important to speak out about healing from the effects of abuse because there are way too many of us out there not getting help and comfort we need or having gone through it. I am so thankful I have been able to do some healing these past several months. I feel very fortunate. I too hope Petey can find the strength to go through the pain and grieve his past otherwise it torments you endlessly.

I must admit am not always happy and peaceful, but I do work on keeping my attitude going along those lines. :-) Beats the hell out of being dogged with resentment and full of shame.

Love you too darlin',
Martha

sirmoonie Turning into a catatonic basketcase doesn't seem anymore healthy that just being plain angry at those who fucked us over. No offense, just my two nicks.

Anyway, so far this unsourced article looks bogus. Haven't found anything corroborating any of it, and the prose looks like it was written by a few of the more uninteresting twits around here who loved the "scandal" in the first place.

Pete Townshend is one tough fucker, he puts himself through more on an average day than most of his lame and very recent detractors have gone through in their lives. Whether he is an "outpatient" at Priory or not, he will be there at the finish line.

If anyone has further links on how Pete Townshend is doing, I'd appreciate them.

"Sound of time a passing, Ronnie!"

Prodigal Son I think the reaction of his fans and admirers outpouring of support will cure him. He won't get back on the wagon as long as he knows that many people still respect him. And for the man's sanity, please people STOP judging him by what he was accused of him but never intended any malice in doing. Pete's always had a hard time liking himself. Just listen to tunes like "How Many Friends," "Empty Glass" or "However Much I Booze." It don't get more personal than that, my friend. Some of our Stonesian heroes have had to deal with demons, Keith did okay and Ronnie is battling them to this day but Pete's had some deep-set ones from even his childhood.

glencar And let's face it: The only interesting thing about this story for the remaining fans is how it affects the tour. BTW Daltrey was in a movie on Showtime last night called ".com.murder" or something like that. I didn't botehr watching it. It must have had a quick pass in the theaters.

jb This is a very sensitive subject ...If he was innocent, his reputation has suffered irreparable harm ;if he is a pedophile, he needs serious help .....The bottom line is that he is correct, no matter what, the public will never view him the same...sadly, many people's lives have been destroyed based on false allegations.....the case many years ago at the california day school comes to mind.

Joey Bridge Over Troubled Water

" When you're weary, feeling small,
When tears are in your eyes, I will dry them all;
I'm on your side. When times get rough
And friends just can't be found,
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down.
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down.

When you're down and out,
When you're on the street,
When evening falls so hard
I will comfort you.
I'll take your part.
When darkness comes
And pains is all around,
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down.
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down.

Sail on silvergirl,
Sail on by.
Your time has come to shine.
All your dreams are on their way.
See how they shine.
If you need a friend
I'm sailing right behind.
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind..................................

( Crowd Reaching a Frenzied & Fevered Pitch + Joey now standing in the spotlight on stage all alone + arms outstretched and reaching for the Heavens )

Like a bridge over troubled water
I WILL EASE YOUR MIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNND ....................................!!!!!!!!!"

( Thundering Applause + Standing Ovation + Audience Cheering Joey Garfunkel wildily with tears in their eyes )

To the contrary, its been mostly forgotten. Other than the instant one, I can't recall any article or piece written about him in months that even mentions it.

Anyone interested in the facts, which is probably the same crowd interested in The Who, have moved on long ago. The rest never cared to dice it out in the first place, other than it was a "fun" area for a small and geeky minority of them to take gratuitous shots in. May the good lord almighty above take a ripping fucking piss on them.

Anyway...hey Josh, do you let all your associates drink at work?
