You wrote: musical masterpiece. Any genre, culture, ANYTHING goes.
A very hard question, for years the question use to be your favourite(s) or your top five, ten, the one you use to listen first when you get drunk, for your wedding, for your funeral, for a sad day, to dance, to party, to get stoned, etc. But now youre asking for masterpieces!!!.
When I bought my very first CD player back in 1985 the first CD I bought was The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway by Genesis, I consider that album and Selling England by the Pound a true genuine masterpieces.
If I need to mention only one, thats my selection. Take a listen under the influence of some Mexican mother nature or with a pH=1!
I cant mention only one, lets classify; anyway Im gonna try to put only one, in two of them I couldnt LOL: (non-Stones only):
- Overall: The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway by Genesis.
- Classic Rock: Tommy by the Who the first original album and the Group/LSO/Guests.
- Live Classic Rock: Performance by Humble Pie.
- Progressive rock: Larks Tongues in Aspic by King Crimson, Selling England by the Pound by Genesis, Tales from Topographic Oceans by Yes, Atom Heart Mother by Pink Floyd.
- Live progressive rock: Heavy ConstruKtion by King Crimson.
- Heavy Rock: Physical Graffiti by Led Zeppelin.
- Guitar Rock: Electric Ladyland by Jimi Hendrix.
- Glam Rock: Live Killers by Queen.
- British psychedelic music: The official release of 14 hour Technicolor Dream Extravaganza with the definitive version of Interstellar Overdrive by Pink Floyd.
- US psychedelic music: Surrealistic Pillow by Jefferson Airplane.
- British Blues: Shake Down by Savoy Brown.
- Jazz:: The Grand Wazoo by Frank Zappa
- Jazz-Blues: With the same name that the genre... Jazz-Blues fusion by John Mayall.
- Jazz-Rock: Dreams by Dreams.
- Punk/new wave/sucking: Wave by Patti Smith
- Latin Rock: Santana Live at the Fillmore 1968 (released in 1997)
- Well... couldnt resist... Mexican Rock: Arpa by Cecilia Toussaint.
- Unclassified or impossible to classify music and/or Irreverent, Humorous, Snide, Complex, Provocative, Witty, Acerbic, Quirky, Silly, Cheesy, Political, Cerebral, Ironic, Cynical, Sarcastic, sike-ay-delic, High, Dark, Party, Celbratory, Dance, Funky, Punk, Clear light, Offensive, Unpredictable, Obscure, Dramatic, Deep, Improvised, Theatrical and Intellectual Music: Were only in it for the Music, Hot Rats, Just another band from LA, Overnite Sensation, Bongo Fury, Lther, Sheik Yerbouti, Joes Garage, Thing Fish (LOL), You are what you is, Broadway the Hard way, Make a Jazz Noise Here, The Best Band You never heard in Your Life, The Yellow Shark all by Mr. Frank Zappa.... and of course the entire You cant do that on stage anymore 12-CD set. All of them are genuine masterpieces of rock.

Hmm.
STUDIO ALBUM: The White Album, by The Beatles.
LIVE ALBUM: Live At Leeds, by The Who.
BONUS "UNEXPECTED" ALBUM: Houses Of The Holy, by Led Zeppelin. I was surprised at how much of a "fun" album it was, only a few typically pretentious Zeppelin numbers. I love "The Song Remains The Same", "D'yer Ma'ker", "The Crunge" and "The Ocean". Stuff like that.

I'm in no condition to name just one, or do say anything is more essential that any other right now, but your Cash pick is excellent and Petty's Southern Accents, Young's Rust Never Sleeps, and Velvet Underground - Loaded come to mind right now.
Great topic by the way.
