On Sunday, April 22, Jack Nicholson turned 70 and his stardom shows no signs of slowing down. Like fellow septuagenarian Clint Eastwood, he is the real deal, a movie star of the Bogart and Clark Gable variety among a mere hand full of living Hollywood legends. His birthday was celebrated in his own whimsical style at his palatial Hollywood Hills home with 600 of his closest celebrity friends in attendance. For the occasion, instead of 70 birthday candles, he hired 70 scantily clad waitresses and a seven-foot high birthday cake made by celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck. Among the guests were his young "The Departed" co-stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Wahlberg, and Matt Damon, who helped stage a "This is Your Life" spoof hosted by a Nicholson impersonator.

Here are a few select birthday greetings from some of his closest colleagues:

Dennis Hopper on his collaboration with Nicholson on "Easy Rider", his 1969 breakout film role: "We dropped acid in Dallas together. We claimed we were both geniuses and died in front of D.H. Lawrence's shrine and stuff like that. But otherwise it was a smooth shoot."

Kathy Bates on her naked hot tub scene with Nicholson in "About Schmidt": "He was a gentleman and when I stood up to get out of the tub, he said: 'Beautiful, honey, just beautiful!', and looked right into my eyes and not at any other part of my body."

"Chinatown" screenwriter Robert Towne on his friendship with Nicholson when he was an 18 year old working as a messenger at Hanna Barbera Studios: "I went up to him and said, 'Jacko, you're going to be a movie star and I'm going to write for you.' That's how it all started, but it certainly didn't happen straight away."

Jack Nicholson started in Hollywood as a 17-year-old messenger at MGM, then hooked up with Roger Corman the King of B-Movies, and broke out into full stardom in "Easy Rider." He's had fifty year career and there's no end in sight.
