Ain't him quite a conservative guy? They call him the "Rotweiler of God" and "Armour cardinal", and I suppose not for nothing...

As the only non-Catholic in my family, I congratulate Benedict XVI on his election and wish him only the best regardless of politics (must admit the family members were hoping for the first Latin American pope) |

Point? Absolutely nada.. I just found it a fascinating little fact that - as I said - I couldn't resist mentioning. Or is that sort of thing that everybody should be "hush hush"? To me it just makes the guy more interesting (if you have in your mind a fear that it makes him "worse" or gives him a bad brand or something)
About my knowledge of the Hitler Jugend, I do know something about it, but I am not a historian, so perhaps you could inform me a bit, if you feel like? But perhaps not in this forum.

I dont think anyone is suggesting it's "hush hush". Anyone with a basic knowledge of German history would know that at that time ALL children of a certain age were obliged to join the Hitler Youth whether they or their parents wanted them to or not. Theres a hell of a difference between that and being a member of the Nazi party
Personally,I find it more interesting that after being conscripted into the German army, he chose to desert.
I fail to see what your point is in 'teasing' Germans about someone's non-existent Nazi past. |

Well well, this topic seems to be red-hot.. is mentioning the word "Hitler" that causes the storm?
Anyway, I didn't claim anything like "Pope is ex-Nazi". That seems to be implicated by someone else. I just find it a delicious historical co-incuidence - let me explicate myself one more time - that the new head of The Holy Roman-Catholic Church belonged to Hitler Jugend as a kid (like all his contemporary generation of kids - yes, we all know that). This ironical little odd fact suited quite 'nicely' to the other features I have heard of this man: his nicknames are "God's Rottweiler", "Panzar Cardinal", he used to be an inquisitor, he is a ultra-conservatist, gives a shit about other religions than Christianity, condemns feminism... quite a character I would say.
Gazza, I really don't understand what do you mean by myself "teasing Germans about someone's non-existent Nazi-past"? Am I teasing Germans? Am I crossing somewhere the unvisible border of political correctness? If I do, that's not intentional.
