Topic: Metallica's Saint anger album is horrible,......From Ian Return to archive
April 11th, 2005 03:48 AM
IanBillen
I know this is a Stones message board and the album came out a while back but I think the shittyness of this album needs to be recognized. I am not a Metallica fan or anything but I will tolerate some of their later more professional works. Except their most recent...

I was just Given Saint Anger, Metallica's latest studio album and I can truly see why the girl who gave it to me told me she hated it.

The song writing is poor. The lyrics are stupid. "My life style determines my death style"?. Ok I get it but how idiotic. I realize Metallica has never truly been known for their intelligent lyrics but the lyrics on all songs of this album could of been alot better if a 15 year old stand in kid wrote them. Honestly.

The production sounds like crap and is so bad it is actually irritating to listen to. Producer Bob Rock tried to get Metallica to sound like a garage band and took it entirely too far. Lars Ulrich's snare drum is so Fu%#ng hollow sounding and tinny on every single track. It makes every song irritating and a turn off just in itself! You just can't get by it. The musicians seem all together uninspired. Meaning there is no real emotion to any of the songs. No quality musicianaship anywhere. Also EVERY SONG sounds completely forced.

Not one song is even close to recieving any sort of notable mention and in no way should recieve even minimal air play. It is that bad. It took Metallica two years to complete this album. They should of never even released it. It does Metallica, with their already severly damaged reputation all harm and not one once of good. This album, before it was started was based on a pretty decent idea and a justified different approach but I simply cannot remember one redeeming quality to the entire work. It seems it was almost purposely produced to turn you off. Seriously. I have no idea how they listened to it and said "yeah, that sounds good"???

I was wondering if any of you had the chance to hear this album and what your thoughts were. Every review I have seen thus far has been a complete thumbs down.

padre At least they got a funny documentary from it. Some Kind of Monster is an insult for the fans, but others find it hillarious. Sounds a bit like Being Mick...

I know. Just watch the documentary and see guitarist Kirk Hammett reading about The Stones in a magazine. I suppose he must be thinking "geeze, we sure kicked these guys out of the industry and held our place"....

Ok I tell you what. Throw in a few good looking young ladies and stay out of the shoot and I'll help you make your porn.
This way you don't have to "strangle" me and you will have your porn taken care of as well.

justforyou Metallica became boring after Cliff's premature death in that Swedish tour bus accident. Prior to that they were full of youthful energy and hard rocking power.

I haven't listened to the new stuff at all (besides seeing that prison video on MTV). I think they've grown out of their own music and are desperately trying to enjoy what they don't!

I have never seen anyone so caught up in their own self created hype than Lars, is this guy for real?

Ever heard of a guy named JB?

Night Clerk You have to check out "Some Kind Of Monster". Its like a new version of Spinal Tap in terms of how delusional a band can become. In one scene, Lars says something like he's so amazed that they can simply walk into a room and create amazing music without thinking about it. Keep in mind that this was during the recording of St. Anger. Also, one of the band members writes out a band "Mission Statement" and hands it out during a meeting. Way too funny.

Good Point, in JB's defence, others feed into that hype too. Even those who despise him keep bringing him up in assorted threads. He is like the Ty Cobb of this place, whether you like him or despise him, he goes in the Hall of Fame because he created a lasting legacy on this board. I fear for the fury he will unleash upon his rumored return.

Andrew, i enjoy your posts!

M.O.W.A.T. I bought this when it came out, listened to half the album and then proceeded to the nearest pawnshop and hocked (there was money well invested!). I like Metallica but I couldn't put up with this tripe.

Bob Tamp Haven't heard new Metallica, probably couldnt deal with hearing it. Have heard one album several times, and that is enough.
One of my clients( 30 years old, but a 14 year old mentality) keeps playing this cd of Metallica from 1986? with gravestones on the cd cover, and songs like " Insane Asylum".
I may be old, or just fucking dense, but every song sounds the same. Fast, loud, and horrible lyrics from what I could read in the cd book. The lyrics are purely juvenile, making the Stones song "Fight" look like a masterpiece.

The other thing is that there is absolutely no melody what so ever. The only dance you could do to Metallica and be synchronized is to jump up and down.
Horrible!

Soldatti St. Anger is a terrible album. Give me Load or Re-Load every time.

gorda Some Kind Of Monster was on Vh1 last night!

I watched a little but of it, but I couldn't sit through the entire thing again! (Actually, I didn't sit through it the first time, I kept getting up and going to the bathroom.)

My brother got that album when it first came out and it came with some DVD footage! All for like $10.00!

P.S. On www.rollingstones.com, in one of the videos, Kirk explains how one of the first songs he learned to play was Brown Sugar (???? Not sure what song, but it was a Rolling Stones' song. )

P.S.S. Sandman (Is that the title of Exit Light! Enter Night! ) Anyways, you know a song is a megahit when they start playing on all the radio stations regardless of genre! I remember that song got played on Top 40 radio stations!

gorda Is it Kirk Hammond?

Or Kurt Hammot?

I can never get his name right?

What's his nationality?

He looks likes he's of mixed heritage, white with Filipino? or maybe Latin?
April 12th, 2005 12:10 AM
gorda For those of you that saw the edited version on Vh1, you need to see the unedited version.

Vh1 beeped out the part where Lars screams "FUCK!" right in James' face!

(I know, I know! It's sad, but funny at the same time.)

Can someone get me a date with him?

P.S. Kirk! Kirk! Kirk! I want to go out with you!

Come play me like you play your guitar!

Woooooooooooooo! Baby!

J.J.Flash It took 2 or 3 years after its release for you to figure out this album is utter crap dude?

I can't deny the fact I enjoyed some of their songs....but definetely, Metallica isn't my thing.

Dan I guess even the band recognizes how bad it is as during the tour they usually played no more than 2 songs off it. Those are the only 2 I have heard, and yep, they are pretty bad. First four albums are absolute classics.
April 14th, 2005 10:17 PM
Soldatti The fuckers didn't go here in 2003 even with 55,000 tickets sold. I missed the respect since then.
April 16th, 2005 06:13 PM
IrelandCalling4 The "St.anger" album is really a mix of the brilliant and the woeful.Half the album is so bogged down with juvenile lyrics and melody-free zones,it's a wonder it's come from one of metal's most respected acts. However, the other half, about 5 or 6 tracks, are it's saving graces, and light-years ahead of the mundane & mediocre "Load" material.

St.Anger,Sweet Amber,Dirty Window,Purify & All Within my hands are all excellent, and up there with Metallic's best.
