NEWSLINE ANCHOR: Rolling Stones next stop in the Capital may be for a concert

Suman Mishra
New Delhi, April 17: We may still be seeing the Rolling Stones perform in Delhi before year-end. And that has come straight from the horses mouth. Well, almost. Former cricketer Dilip Doshi, the man responsible for organising their concerts in Bangalore and Mumbai, says there is hope yet.

The absence of Delhi in the legendary rock bands concert itinerary was the cause of heart break for die-hard fans in the city along with a general sense of betrayal. But all that can be put behind us. This time Delhi was not on the agenda, but God willing, they will come back soon, Doshi says. If we can bring them in before year-end, then the Stones are definitely coming to Delhi.

And yet, the Stones did roll into the Capital, so what if not as part of the official concert tour. Stones lead guitarist Keith Richards and bassist Ron Wood have been doing some honest-to-goodness vacationing.

Richards and Wood flew in from Jaipur about four days ago. Before Jaipur, the duo had also touched down at Udaipur, as special guests of the Maharana of Mewar, Arvind Singh Mewar, at the Shiv Nivas Palace.

The Maharana made sure the rock stars got royal treatment. A special evening, which had the Maharanas personal guests and the pop group Silk Route, saw the two Stones swaggering in. The buzz their entry created was electric, says Silk Routes lead singer Mohit Chauhan.

On our last day there, a grand royal dinner was organised at the Zenana Mahal, says Chauhan. We had no idea the Stones were coming in, and suddenly someone told us they were there. We went up to them and shook hands, but couldnt get to speak much.

In Delhi, the stars booked five suites at the Taj Mahal Hotel. Doshi, whose association with the Stones goes back 30 years, describes the stay as short, but sweet. Richards, Wood and Doshi found little time for a drive to green areas, staying indoors most of the time.

The three reportedly dined at Machan, the hotels Indian speciality restaurant. They are also know to have visited the in-house health club and spa. And a little bit of shopping didnt escape the stars either.

Their next vacation destination in India is the predictable Mecca of every western tourist. You guessed itthe two Stones are probably lying on beach mats soaking up the sun in Goa right this very moment. (After Delhi, they parted ways with Doshi, who is now back in Mumbai.)
