Topic: 1982 Tour - a look back Return to archive
04-10-03 04:45 PM
T&A The 1982 tour doesnt get a whole lot of discussion amongst fans and collectors for a couple of good reasons 1) its lack of quality resultant product (i.e., bootlegs) compared to the plethora coming out of the 81 tour (what do we have now, about a dozen soundboards/broadcasts?). 2) the fact that it bears a strong resemblance to the 81 tour setlist-wise. Only significant change was the inclusion of Big Boppers Chantilly Lace in favor of WOAFand I believe they dropped CL late in the tour. Also, I believe LIB was dropped toward the end of the tour. Personnel-wise we get Leveall in favor of Mac for the first time and Gene Barge in place of Ernie Watts on alto.

The only sbd to emerge to date from 82 is the Naples, but its a partial. Of the handful of audience sources Ive got the best might be the 6/20 Gothenburg show (VGPs Drinking and Dancing) wonderful upfront guitars (gawd, how I miss them!)vocals are a tad distant, but not bad.

There are some subtle differences to 81 that Ive noticed however and wondered if there are others that Ive missed:

1) Ronnie plays slide on YCAGWYW. Nice touchchanges the sound of the song quite noticeably.
2) The guitar solo breaks tend to be longer on tunes like Black Limo and LIB. Always welcome.
3) Gene plays the background vocal doo-doos on Hang Fire missing from the 81 version.
4) Many of the songs are played at a faster tempo than in 81. LMG, Shattered, HangFire, to name 3.

Any other things Ive missed that separate a typical 82 show from 81?

shakedhandswithkeith That tour was really Rock`n Roll - no tour behind was so cool, had a better stage and a better setlist. Keith and Ronny sang background, just ernie watts on sax and Stu and Ian on piana (in 81; 82 Stu and Chuck the Fuck). They don`t need a hornsection if bobby is in town and I don`t like the background chor. Who needs all the people on stage? the best line up is 5 rolling stones ( 4 plus Bass) and a piano - that `s Rock `n Roll!!

T&A Some folks assume Bobby Keyes didn't play with them in '81 and '82 - he did. He played on LIB and BS....Watts and Barge (82) played on the other songs...

steel driving hammer Hey thanks alot.

82 is prolly my fave tour.

Though 69, 72 etc were better musically, there is just something about 82 I like.

I think it has to do alot w/ Watts and Wyman in 82.

Unlike Taylor who played the same notes every night...

Ronnie was fresh in 82. Diff solo for every song, every night.

I've been searching the web for 82 concert reviews, pics...

I have a fair amount of pictures and alot of 82 shows on disc.

Here's my boot collection, if you have 82 shows that I don't, wanna trade?

Thanks.

marko FINALLY we end up to talk about my fave tour!!!To me this
is/was the REAL summer tour.Even i was only 11 back then,
i dod remember it was very HOT summer! And listening the
shows now afterwards, micks says often that its hot! And,some
or many of the americans dont know how long is a scandinavian,or european winter(and how cold),so tour like
this,on hot summer,what a stage,beatifull girls,and stones
on stage,in top form.Anything better to offer?'
Let bleed was dropped from Frankfurt july 1st 82 show, and so
was chantilly lace, and both were not played again on the tour. They did 23,ONLY??hah,,on couple of shows, like Cologne
and Vienna. Then in madrid they added ANGIE,they did couple
of very good versions of the songs,Gene Barge played nice
and memorable solo on it.In Basel, ronnie&keef were BADLY
drunk,very badly.Little t&a sounds,like barbarians,too drunken,and angie,is simply awful.
