gorda "What . . . folly it is for the natives of the Californias to attempt to check the emigration to this country. They might just as well attempt to arrest the thundering wheels of time to resist the mighty waters' flow . . .

Landsford W. Hastings, an excerpt from a letter to John Marsh 1846

He was making reference to the fact that the Mexicans living in California, while it was still a part of Mexico, were complaining about all the Anglo squatters who were just setting up camp and taking over the land. Basically, he was saying forget about it, we're taking over. And, he was right, Mexico lost California in 1848, along with Arizona, New Mexico, parts of Utah, Nevada, and Colorado. (And, Texas, that's another story, too . . .)

Basically, Hastings thought that the californios [Mexicans] attempt to stop the immigration of U.S. settlers was foolish.

As a believer of Manifest Destiny, he felt that the U.S. had the right to take over California. He thought that the Mexican government should not stop American settlers from coming into California.

Ten Thousand Motels Why would anyone want to emigrate to California? Too many goddam people. If I were going to emigrate anywhere it would be to some nice isolated island in the South Pacific, where human contact would be strictly limited to just a few accomodating natives. No beaurocrats, no taxes, no wars, no bullshit.

Oh! Puh-leeze!

I'm merely pointing out that the Anglo Californians of today who are complaining about all this illegal immigration, yet they are descendents of people who once came here ILLEGALLY! And, they didn't come here to work for less than minimum wage, they came here to take over the land!

P.S. I am a good American. I go to work every day and pay my taxes, and every election, I vote!
