REVIEW:

The title of this long awaited Sister Morphine product that covers the best Exile On Main Street-era outtakes comes from a line in the lyrics of the tuen, "Turd On A Run", that was also written on one of the inside covers of the original vinyl album. This nice collection from the '71 sessions has been re-worked by Cool Cool Hand with his usual technical bravado and offers the dedicated Stones listener the chance to feel how these precious outtakes could have been had the Stones themselves done what dozens of other bands have, that is remastering their original work and adding bonus tracks. But that is not in the Stones attitude as each of their past work is seen as a finished product and there is no way it could be re-released with different tracks, so collectors have to rely on the underground market in order to get additional material. This Sister release most notable feature is the sound quality that blows every other Exile outtakes effort away, since here there is no hint of the hiss that has marred any otheir release, see for example "Good Time Women" which is the first version of "Tumbling Dice" - here presented with every instrument standing out in beautiful shape. The first song that gives the name to the album is "Get A Line On You" which is an early take of "Shine A Light". The same can be easily said for"Shake Your Hip" and "Ventilator Blues" that have never been heard in such clarity with Taylor's guitar soaring like in his best solos. Well known "Hillside Blues" (a.k.a. "I Don t Know The Reason Why") follows in a long bluesy ride for its' 11 minutes. Then we have again another gem with "Sweet Virginia", that coupled with the instrumental first take of "Sweet Black Angel" called "Bent Green Needles" are offered up for scrutiny and we find these rare tracks are free of unwanted noises. "Loving Cup" is a more acoustic version of the finished Exile song with both of the Glimmer Twins seemingly in altered state, lyrics are also a bit different from the finished known version. "I Ain t Signifying" was known also as "I Ain t Lying" and is a half-finished effort that doesn't ever take-off. "Loving Cup" is instrumental with some guitar fills that I never noticed before, while "All Down The Line" is the famous acoustic version, I wonder if the fabled 15 minutes version of this song will ever surface? "Travelin Man" is well known with a tortured lead guitar that overshadows the great electric piano riffs while the song develops and "Shine A Light" is at times even more convincing than the original version, with its gospel flavour so in evidence to shadow the politeness of the released song. The set ends with "I m Going Down", a version of this song that portrays the Stones at their top, this tune being on Metamorphosis with heavy bottom ends than usual and the rhythmic percussions that add power to this track ending this brilliant collection on a high note. The songs here are from different times and locations but preserve a sense of unity that makes this effort a very convincing portfolio of Exile outtakes in the same vein as if there was a relationship between all the songs as the real album was. The packaging of this release is superb too with a great front cover of Keith Richards holding a pack of Brown Sugar with an open magazine on his lap portraying a bunch of Hell's Angels riding their bikes: somebody has thought this as a reference to the Altamont gig where the Angels were paid in free beer but ruined everything with their attitude giving more than disease to the Stones and fans: frankly it is not known if that is the right interpretation for such a front cover (or even the song lyrics where they came from), but that and the back cover are tasty works that live up to the fine material found inside. What "A Beautiful Buzz" indeed!
2nd March 2008 10:00 AM
LuvGlimmerTwins Thank you kindly, Pauli and Norbert, for the Exile outs.
