Third Test, Barbados, day three:
West Indies 224 & 94 lost to England 226 & 93-2 by eight wickets
England lead 4-Test series 3-0
Full scorecard

England secured a first series win in the Caribbean since 1968 after Matthew Hoggard's hat-trick set up an eight-wicket victory in the third Test.

Marcus Trescothick scored 42 and skipper Michael Vaughan 32 as the visitors chased down a victory target of 93 to win inside three days.

England earlier bowled the Windies out for just 94, their lowest ever score in 42 Tests in Barbados.

Hoggard, who took 4-35, snared the 33rd hat-trick in Test cricket history.

The visitors, who hold an unassailable 3-0 series lead, sealed a third Test victory for the first time in 74 years of competition between the two teams in the West Indies.

Prior to this tour, England had won just four out of 31 Tests in the Caribbean since 1968.

But an unprecedented whitewash is now on the agenda for Vaughan's troops, with the fourth Test in Guyana remaining.

If Graham Thorpe batted England into a winning position with a century on day two, then Hoggard delivered the hammer blow with his hat-trick.

Hoggard became the 10th England bowler to claim a Test hat-trick

Hoggard embraced his team-mates in jubilation after ousting Ramnaresh Sarwan, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ryan Hinds in successive balls before lunch.

It was the 10th England hat-trick, and the most recent for the country since Darren Gough dismissed Australia's Ian Healy, Colin Miller and Stuart MacGill at Sydney in 1999.

The Yorkshire paceman's triple strike - which reduced the hosts to 45-5 - heralded the start of an all-too-familiar collapse for the Windies.

They were bowled out for 47 in Jamaica in the first Test of this series, just two months after the one-day side made 54 in South Africa.

Hoggard, swinging the ball markedly, got the ball rolling on the third morning with the wicket of opener Daren Ganga, caught by Thorpe for 11, after the hosts had resumed play on 21-1.

Lara battled manfully but his West Indies side wilted to England

The scoring soon dried up with skipper Brian Lara wearing a painful knock on the elbow - the first of several blows to the body - but there was no sign of the events to follow.

Sarwan, who could add just five to his first-innings 63, drove Hoggard softly to Ashley Giles in gully.

Chanderpaul then followed after misreading the line and falling lbw, and Hinds dallied outside his off-stump with Andrew Flintoff doing the rest in the slips to cap the highlight of Hoggard's 25-Test career.

It got better for England, with Flintoff then picking up the wicket of Ridley Jacobs, caught by Mark Butcher, for one just before lunch.

But for a dogged 32-run resistance between Lara and Tino Best, the Windies tail failed to show any of the fight which characterised England's effort on day two.

Best and Pedro Collins departed either side of an hour-long rain delay, precipitating Lara's demise - caught off Steve Harmison for 33 trying to score quick runs - and the falling of Fidel Edwards to end the innings.

The stage was set, amid gathering dark clouds, for Trescothick to break the shackles of his torrid run of form and put England on the path to victory.

The left-hander did not disappoint, adopting his usual hyperactive approach to batting to snuff out any hopes the Windies had of an unlikely comeback.

Vaughan did his part - hitting five boundaries and a six - before edging Collymore behind.

But Trescothick carried on, blazing six boundaries and a six before falling the same way as Vaughan with just two more runs needed to win.

It was left to Butcher to take England over the line after 20 overs and send the multitude of England fans at Kensington Oval into rapturous celebration.

England rejoice in victory

England celebrated after a three-day eight-wicket win
England enjoyed the "celebration to end all celebrations" after securing their first Test series victory in the West Indies since 1968.
Hat-trick hero Matthew Hoggard joked the two extra days off after securing an eight-wicket third Test win would be spent recovering.

"The reaction has been amazing," Hoggard said. "We came here to create history and we've done that in style."

"We troubled their batsmen, put them under pressure and they collapsed."

Hoggard dismissed middle-order batsmen Ramnaresh Sarwan, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ryan Hinds in successive deliveries as the hosts tumbled to 94 all out.

This game has been one huge team effort

England captain Michael Vaughan
He told BBC Radio Five Live: "I've been in that position before but you seldom get there so I just tried to stay calm, make the batsmen play and ask them questions.

The tourists have the opportunity to claim the first ever series whitewash in the Caribbean when the fourth Test begins in Antigua next Saturday.

"We've come on in leaps and bounds; we've made great strides in our fitness and have reaped the rewards," Hoggard added.

Hoggard was the 10th England bowler to claim a hat-trick
"There is an amazing high around the side and everybody expects to do well."

As the first captain since Colin Cowdrey to win a series in the Caribbean, Michael Vaughan confirmed a clean sweep is the next objective.

"That's the aim. We will be going to Antigua trying to win but we will certainly celebrate this series victory after the long wait," he said.

England chased 93 to win for the loss of two wickets after dismissing the hosts for their lowest ever score in Barbados.

Vaughan added: "It hasn't sunk in. It means so much. We've had so much hard work - it has been one huge team effort."

The key to England's success has been to decapitate the batting by getting Lara out cheaply

"When we went out there this morning we expected a real tough game but they only got 94.

"The team has worked really hard. We've had individuals who have put in outstanding displays when we have needed them."

Graham Thorpe won the man of the match award for his crucial century in the first innings.

"It's a fabulous place to get a hundred," he said.

"It was right up there, probably my second best knock for England.

"This has been great, it's been a long time and I've been on the wrong end of a few games here."

Marcus Trescothick, who scored 42 - his best score for the series - in the successful run-chase, was overjoyed.

He said: "The boys have done very well. We've improved with pretty much every game we've played."

Hannalee You beat me to it .

Here's Aggers:

England's sweet success

By Jonathan Agnew
BBC cricket correspondent

Hoggard and Thorpe can finally celebrate making history

It is ironic that the Kensington Oval - known as Fortress Kensington because of the years of home domination here - is the ground where West Indies surrendered their proud record against England.

For England, on the wrong end of so many series here and at home, it could not have been more appropriate that 36 years of history should end here.

But this, only the latest in a remarkable series of West Indies' batting collapses, was as disappointing as it was inevitable.

Interestingly, the scenario at the start of play was incredibly similar to the one at Sabina Park in the first Test which resulted in their being blown away for just 47.

They managed to double that, but confidence in their batting line-up is clearly non-existent, and this was to become the seventh time in six years that they have been bowled out for less than 100.

As England's batsmen were given the opportunity to wrap up the series, they did so at a canter

The morning belonged to one of England's unsung heroes - Matthew Hoggard.

Making the ball swing away from the bat just enough, he found the edge of Ganga's bat when only 13 runs had been added.

And then he ripped out the middle order with the first hat-trick by an Englishman for five years.

First, Sarwan swished at a full, wide outswinger and was caught by Giles in the gully for five.

Chanderpaul, the left hander, shuffled in front of his stumps and was plumb lbw first ball.

Then, after an unprepared Hinds had finally finished fiddling with his gloves, Hoggard bowled a ball of perfect line which Hinds edged to the bucket-handed Flintoff at second slip.

Freddie rarely misses anything these days, and the cheer from thousands of England supporters brought the house down while, at the non-striker's end, Brian Lara sunk to his knees in despair.

Brian Lara had a bruising time on the final day

The game was up - and everyone knew it.

Three overs later, Flintoff found some extra bounce, and a startled Jacobs edged to Butcher in the slips and the West Indies had collapsed to 48-6 - a lead of just 46.

Lara tried his best to take as much of the strike as possible, and took some nasty blows to his hands in the process.

With Best he added 32, but after one of several breaks for rain, Flintoff found Best's outside edge and, for once, Flintoff was supported by his slip fielders.

Lara was ninth out, mis-timing a rather desperate looking pull to mid on, and as soon as England's batsmen were given the opportunity to wrap up the series, they did so at a canter.
