stonedinaustralia lucinda williams is coming to town soon - i really don't know much about her or her music - what's it all about??

any info/recommendations or otherwise greatly appreciated

also, and promise you won't ridicule me,there's a production of "westside story" on in a month or so - while i'm generally bored by the idea of musicals this is one i've always been interested in seeing and i'll probably check it out

American Music. Never seen her but should be good.

Just got in from Neko Case being backed by the Sadies and to say the least she had some problems tonight.

Check her out SIA -- she's got that ragged desperate rock and country edge to her that I know you will appreciate, and her sensibilities are definitely part Dylan/Keith etc. Been around for years, a songwriter's songwriter, but for my $$ she's really come into her own as a performer in the last five years. Her latest album, World Without Tears, is probably her most rock and roll record, and I really dig it. Also her Car Wheels on a Gravel Road disc and her s/t from the late 80s are great. The Aussie version of World Without Tears has tracks only available on the domestic LP version of the album and they are great so I'd shop smart and go with that. Go see the show -- take plenty of your rotating purple pal and you will feel as if you have been transported to dramatically emotional heaven. . . .

Got the Fall with Dan Melchior's Broke Review and the Dylan Orange Peel gig coming up, will probably attend the Gillian Welch and Jurassic Five gig towards the end of the month, Dirtbombs May 12 at one of our local clubs, and probably several others I'm forgetting at the moment.

Since when are the Sadies her backup band? Did they do their own set? What were the problems?

I don't know, they must be touring together. They are all Canadians right? They did not do their own set unless I missed it. Ticket said 9 pm show. Got there about 10:15 and the opening band was on. They were recording for one of those SABAS things and Neko kept referring to the evil truck outside. She was unnerved by the big truck and the rock star looking guy doing the sound for the recording. She kept worring about her guitar staying in tune and would tune after every song. Not that I haven't seen that but she killed any momentum she had. Not only that, she played a few new songs and fucked up so she started them over. The good thing was the Sadies and Kelly Hogan and Carolyn Mark on vocals. Neko was not impressive at all. No stage presence either.

Nasty Habits I think she's totally overrated, albeit beautiful. She's got a great voice, but there is a fussiness about it that bugs me. I do think it works in the New Pornographers, though. The Sadies are a great band. Last time I saw them they closed their show with a Mekons song. How were the Mekons?

Bloozehound great band!

Sir Stonesalot I know Nasty doesn't need me to echo him...but I will anyhow.

Go see Lucinda. Trust us.

Or PM me, and trust your ears.

Dan Were you close? When I saw Neko Case I was sorta far back but she looked pretty tall to me. How tall do you think she is? (I love tall chicks)

The Mekons were incredible. Sloppy (but not drunk as they usually are) but the songs are just incredible. Tom's falling down the stairs drunk croak, Sally's beautiful voice, and of course Langford. They sat down the whole show and weren't cranked up but the songs are too good not too be moved by them. They did several readings of their lyrics as well. I saw one mic stand and one taper at a table. The show should turn up at/on the Internet Archive as should Saturday's show which I did not attend.

Did you see the Sadies open for the Mekons at all during the Mekons 25th Anniversary tour. They went as the Ugly Band and did all Mekons songs. They also backed Langford on his last (word is he has a new one out soon) solo cd and did a tour together as well.

Not too far from the stage but it was a small room and a lot of people packed in. Couldn't really tell how tall she was. Taller than Kelly Hogan for sure but I honestly couldn't tell ya.
